Bugzilla – Bug 3921
Alpha page bar does not show Hebrew characters properly on Windows
Last modified: 2008-09-15 14:39:24 UTC
When looking at Browse Artists / Albums / Genres The Alpha page bar displays 1 2 A B ... X Y Z and then the rest is gibrish instead of alphabet hebrew. It used to work properly in 6.2.x and 6.3.x. This is for Unicode tags that hasn't changed when switching from 6.3.x to 6.5b.
Interesting - my one Hebrew track messes up the alpha bar too when sorted by artist. Could there be an encoding problem with the database code around the alphabar?
Is this a dupe of 2475? Otherwise I will dig for one of the hebrew tracks I have around here (appears to be one in Bug 3339) and have a look. You might post in the beta forum seeing if anyone is having this problem on non-windows systems, too.
(In reply to comment #2) it might be a dup of 2475, and might be a different issue. in 2475 the workaround is to rename the files. all my files are visible and playable. the just have wicked characters in the alpha bar page...
Okay I tested it on XP and under linux (ubuntu, using our debian package). I used the music track from bug 3339, which has Hebrew tags. Under XP I was able to duplicate the symptoms you saw, noting a character represented like x[] (lowercase 'x' followed by the empty square windows loves to use when it cannot display a character). Under Ubuntu, I didn't see that symptom at all, and the Hebrew character 'He', I believe (ה) is clearly displayed in the alpha page bar. Therefore, I tentatively conclude that this bug is a duplicate of bug 2475 (which is known to only affect windows systems). However I will leave it open for a little while in case some other user has some additional or contrary information to add. You may wish to add your email address to the CC: box of bug 2475 so that you will be updated when its status changes.
I exchanged some email with Avi which I am adding to the bug for easy reference: Connecting to the linux server from IE on a windows system shows the same problem! Which suggests that it's an issue with the client. I tried this on both IE and Firefox, though, and both failed to show the 'he', displaying instead an 'x' or 'x[]'. But then, connecting to the XP server from linux also displayed 'x'! So the only thing that has worked 100% is connecting to the linux server under linux. Is the web really this fragile?
