The left pane of the SlimServer front page under Default should include a search box. It's crazy that there's no quick way of finding tracks/artists/albums from this page. As it is, you have to click the Search Music link, which comes second under Search (it should at least be first!), at which point you then get a very empty page containing nothing but the search box. This box should have been on the previous page!

nothing but the search box and a hidden div waiting to contain search results.

search box patch to Default

How about a search box in the header on every page? See the attached patch for the Default skin. I seldom even find myself on the home page, so getting to a search usually takes at least two hops. An alternative might be to do something like the search in vBulletin, where you have a javascripted icon that opens up the search box in an overlay.

Sounds like a Dean decision to me.

Interesting approach, Jim. Post 6.5 I want to make some major changes to the default skin, this is definitely something to consider. Let's hold off on this until 6.5 is in the can.

It's there in the new Default skin.

A lot of people who have been using the new Default skin have been clamoring for an always visible Search box. This solution requires navigating to a certain place in the browse hierarchy, same as before.
Comment 8 Max Spicer 2007-11-19 14:19:13 UTC
It is better than it was as the search box is now on the front page - you don't need to navigate away from the front page to get to it. Plus, once you've expanded your Music Library, it stays expanded. I think I'm happy with the current solution, but I need to use it a bit to decide. Not that it's up to me anyway! ;-)
