Description Andre 2006-08-10 04:36:21 UTC
Gentleman,

Changing the security settings for BLOCK INCOMING CONNECTIONS without adding the Squeezebox IP to the ALLOWED IP ADDRESSES prevents music playing. Am I the only having this? Easy to workaround but if this is how it's supposed to be, I suggest that the squeezebox IP could be pre-filled like already happening with local IP addresses.

perhaps you should have taken this to the forum for discussion first.
Comment 2 Andre 2006-08-10 09:47:07 UTC
yeah... perhaps.

I'm not sure I understand where you are blocking these connections? Is this the Windows firewall? Some third-party software?

Perhaps I can add some clarifying text to our connectivity wiki page if there's room for improvement.

Chris,

Version 6.5b1 has some "security features" on the server settings, this includes a setting that allows the slimserver user to allow the connection to the slimserver web interface from a group of configured hosts. No problem, but currently, the user needs to guess that he needs to add the squeezebox IP address to the list of the computers allowed to connect to the SlimServer web Interface.

My suggestion is that this should be stated on the SlimServer Web Interface or the IP address of the server Squeezebox should be already part of the list since the system doesn't work if you also block the Squeezebox.

As far as I understand, this is not related to 3rd party or personal firewalls. Is a SlimServer 6.5b1 behaviour.

Ah thanks for clarifying that.

Do you have some thoughts on this, Dean?

Well, one of the reasons you'd do ip-based blocking is to prevent
other (rogue) players from connecting.

So, I'd prefer to change the description to indicate that you'll need
to add the IP addresses of any players you want to work.

Dean,

As I said before. Deans suggestion sounds like a solution.

Okay I propose instead of:

BLOCK INCOMING CONNECTIONS
This option allows you to enable blocking of incoming CLI and HTTP requests by source IP address.

We should have:

BLOCK INCOMING CONNECTIONS
This option allows you to enable blocking of incoming CLI and HTTP requests by source IP address. If you enable this option, you must enter your Squeezebox and Transporter IP addresses in the Allowed IP Addresses box.

I went and looked at the strings.txt file to see if I could just go ahead and check this in, but there are scary foreign languages in there.
Comment 10 KDF 2006-08-15 10:34:37 UTC
If your editor shows you the foreign characters as foreign characters, then you should be ok to use that editor. Standard practise has been to erase the other languages when a string is changed. This way, the stringEditor plugin will flag the string as being in need of translation. Herger is generally very quick with the German translations :)
Comment 11 Chris Owens 2006-08-15 11:40:03 UTC
Not all of the languages appeared. I will try installing some additional language support and see if the Hebrew and Japanese comes up.

We can make this a little less scary:

BLOCK INCOMING CONNECTIONS

You can limit network access to SlimServer to specific IP addresses.
If you use
this option, add the addresses of any players or web browsers you
wish to allow to
connect to SlimServer in the Allowed IP Addresses setting.

If you can't update the foreign languages, just leave them for now.

Dean doesn't work here any more :)
