Description Dan Evans 2006-08-01 14:27:01 UTC
(reference tmid 7322)

Looking at the product descriptions and data sheets for the Slim Devices Transporter and Squeezebox products, I see no
polarity inversion capability.	Is this correct?

If you want recorded music to come to life, and have good imaging and staging, it's a prerequisite that it be played in
correct polarity, matching the absolute polarity of the live music, through phase coherent speakers (many speakers,
even many very expensive ones, are not even near phase coherent). Having a polarity inversion capability, preferably
done in the digital domain, is vitally important to getting it right with lots of recorded music and hi-fi equipment.
It's amazing how often the default playback is wrong, even though the equipment is all hooked up "right".

With high quality recordings, the effect of inverting polarity on reproduction of recorded music has been astounding to
me. The character of voices and instruments often changes significantly. The imaging, staging, focus, and overall
presentation can change dramatically. My appreciation of music played in correct polarity is more natural and relaxed,
with greater enjoyment and involvement, as compared to listening to the same music played in incorrect polarity.

I'm still using a Turtle Beach Audiotron feeding a modified Benchmark Media DAC1. I would really like to have easy
polarity control with a Squeezebox or Transporter, along with the other benefits of a more modern audio server.
Please, please, PLEASE include a polarity selection capability, per track and per disc in the database, as well as an
override polarity control from the remote, in the Slim Devices Squeezebox and Transporter. Your products and your
customers are missing a lot without it!

From a potential purchaser, but probably not until polarity inversion selection is included.

We aren't going to implement this per-track, but we will offer a server setting. If there were an existing tag for this, we would consider implementing support.

how do you know what polarity your stuff is at and if you should be changing it?

just by listening?
