At r8494 the VA artist no longer appears under Browse Artists or Browse Genres.

Jim, do the tracks you're expecting to see in VA have an ALBUMARTIST set?  How about the COMPILATION flag?  I'm just trying to figure out what part of the logic is broken.

Yes to both.  In all cases I have ALBUMARIST=Various Artists and COMPILATION=1.  The library is all Flac.

Aha flac seems to be the key.  Mysteriously, VA seems to be working okay for MP3 files.

Here's the shortest track on one of my VA albums.  This album was particularly noticeable in the browsing of genres because it's the only album I have tagged Acoustic.  When I browse into Acoustic I see '0 albums with 0 songs by 0 artists' and no artists listed.  I see this, however, with all genres with compilation albums.  The album counts appear correct, but the VA artist and his compilations are missing.

These flac files show up correctly for me under VA in genres and artists.  The original file name is "VariousArtistsTest2-flac.zip"

Err no, because I had given my flac files the wrong album tag, so they were really showing up, but I wasn't looking for them in the right place.

I created the attached sample data.

four flac files in a directory.  The Album name is Testfiles2, ALBUMARTIST is set to Various Artists, COMPILATION is set to 1, Genre is set to Blues (as test content should be).  They all have different artist names (one has no artist, the others have Artist2, ARtist3, and ARtist4).

These tracks all (now that my brain is working) show up for me under Various Artists in both Browse Artists and Browse Genres.

This is with SlimServer Version: 6.5b1 - 8509 - Windows XP - EN - cp1252

I ran a clear/rescan at r8522 and the VA artist was back where it should be in both browse modes.  Just to make sure I wasn't dreaming I went back to r8494 and did another clear/rescan and they were gone.  So something must have fixed this between 8494 and your 8509.  Marking fixed.
