Description Ross Levine 2006-07-17 17:36:33 UTC
Several customers have mentioned interest in playing their Apple lossless or Windows Media Player lossless files on their ReadyNAS'. Unfortunately this does not work. Chris and I have verified this, apparently has something to do with licensing and transcoding.

I have created a wma lossless and apple lossless file as a test, they are located on Infrant1 (\\10.0.3.7\)

These formats have to be transcoded into something the Squeezebox can natively decode, and linux-based installations don't have the codecs to transcode these formats.

From what I've read in the Infrant forums they feel that the ReadyNAS doesn't have the power to do transcoding. Does the Infrant version of SlimServer even do plain one-way decoding of any audio formats to WAV? Or can it only stream files in their original format? If the computing power isn't there to at least decode these formats into WAV then the licensing issue is a moot point.

UPDATE: RAIDiator v3.00 (available from www.infrant.com) does support ALAC, thus apple lossless files can be played from the ReadyNAS.

There is however an audible pop / click bug present between tracks. I am currently in the process of helping Sam Feng (from Infrant) reproduce this bug, and get it filed on their end.

UPDATE: There is a new version of RAIDiator available at www.infrant.com -> support -> downloads that fixes the ALAC issue, there is no longer an audible pop / snap.
