Bugzilla – Bug 3711
Not all FLACs/MP3s play
Last modified: 2009-01-29 09:47:07 UTC
Slimserver is on a Fedora Core 5 Linux box. Web interface is accessed from a Win2K machine. Music is on the Linux box. Issue with slimserver 2006_07_07: Multiple flacs in a directry that is accesible to slimserver. Not all flacs play. Some give an error: problem: can't open file for: <title> The files have the same permissions. The files play fine in winamp on the windoze box. Also: slimserver is not that fast and kinda big. I know a 600 Mhz firewall is not powerfull but scanning a few directories with less than 200 mp3s takes ages and refreshing a directory is not quick. The Linux machine has plenty of RAM.
When I rename the non-playable files they are playable. Details: # mv 05\ Data\ Bank.flac 05.flac # mv 02\ Nine\ Lives.flac 02.flac # mv 03\ Donald\ Trump\ \(Black\ Version\).flac 03.flac # mv 04\ Love\ Machine.flac 04.flac The short names then play. Other files with names like 01 Murph Drag.flac play OK. Also 6.3.0 has this issue. So the handling of filenames varies?
Also Mp3 files have this issue. All mp3 files are same type: # file *.mp3 01 Planet Rock.mp3: Audio file with ID3 version 22.0 tag, MP3 encoding 02 Looking For The Perfect Beat.mp3: Audio file with ID3 version 22.0 tag, MP3 encoding 03 Renegades Of Funk.mp3: Audio file with ID3 version 22.0 tag, MP3 encoding 04 Frantic Situation.mp3: Audio file with ID3 version 22.0 tag, MP3 encoding 05 Who You Funkin' With_.mp3: Audio file with ID3 version 22.0 tag, MP3 encoding 06 Go Go Pop.mp3: Audio file with ID3 version 22.0 tag, MP3 encoding 07 They Made A Mistake.mp3: Audio file with ID3 version 22.0 tag, MP3 encoding computer blue #3.mp3: Audio file with ID3 version 22.0 tag, MP3 encoding Control (Curry & Van Inkel Minimix).mp3: Audio file with ID3 version 23.0 tag, MP3 encoding control.mp3: Audio file with ID3 version 23.0 tag, MP3 encoding Alles files have same permission and groups (770, udo.slimserver). Only the bottom 3 files play. What is wrong!? I bought the SB to play all of my songs. Please let me know how I can gather enough info so you can fix this bug.
udo, could you attach one of the non-playing files to this bug?
Created attachment 1324 [details] One of the MP3s that don't play on the SB/slimserver but work OK in Winamp
Hi udo, For some reason, Bugzilla seems to have forgotten the original filename of the file you uploaded. Do you remember what it was?
01 Planet Rock.mp3 was the mp3's name. What more tests can I do to help fix the bug? I just browse the music folder and in a subdirectory I have the mp3's.

Any hints on builds that I might try? Ideas about the cause(s)?
After renaming the files the non-playing files become playable: 01 Musicology (MMM).flac 02 Knock On Wood (MMM).flac 03 DMSR (MMM).flac 04 DMSR (NAACP).flac 05 We're A Winner (NAACP).flac 06 I Never Loved A Man (NAACP).flac 07 Satisfied (NAACP).flac 08 I Don't Want Nobody To Give Me Nothin (NAACP).flac 09 Housequake (NAACP).flac 10 The Jam (NAACP).flac 11 The Bird (NAACP).flac 12 The Glamorous Life (NAACP).flac 13 Santana Medley (NAACP).flac 14 Fury (SNL).flac 15 Beautiful, Love, and Blessed (SNL).flac 16 Te Amo Corazon (BRITS).flac 17 Fury (BRITS).flac 18 Purple Rain (BRITS).flac 19 Let's Go Crazy (BRITS).flac 20 Lolita (AI).flac 21 Satisfied (AI).flac 22 Get On The Boat (GMA).flac 23 Red Headed Step Child (GMA).flac 24 Let's Go Crazy (GMA).flac 25 Ain't Nobody (BET).flac 26 Sweet Thing (BET).flac 27 Tell Me Something Good (BET).flac 28 Through The Fire (BET).flac 29 I Feel For You (BET).flac 2KTV_Audio_Volume2.par2 30 I'm Every Woman (BET).flac 31 3121 (BET).flac How can this be?!
Also tuning in to radio stations doe not work well. This bug looks similar to this one (Not all FLACs/MP3s play) but I am not sure. Should I file another report? Tuning in to http://www.sfasu.edu/ksau/ksau.high.pls does not work. Using http://ip:port does work.
Dan, I seem to be having a hard time reproducing this. I'm sure you have a better understanding than me of linux filesystem peculiarities that might cause this. Do you have any theories?
The MP3 that you uploaded plays fine for me on 6.5 There is nothing special about the path names that you list. The remote URL issue sounds like your server isn't resolving names properly.
Can I test 6.5? Resolving goes via the same box which does resolving for my web browsing which works well.
It would be very helpful for you to test 6.5. It's available at http://www.slimdevices.com/downloads/nightly/latest/6.5/
The 'v6.5' build installs and starts mysql although I alread have mysql running. Why include mysql in the rpm? Mysql is available as a separate rpm and can be made a dependency. At this moment I cannot connect to the SlimServer. (!)

Sorry, I should have inserted a wait() in my instructions until after bug 3774 gets fixed and put into a nightly build!
Subject: Re: Not all FLACs/MP3s play There was a typo in last nights build - It's been fixed, and I'm rebuilding now. Regarding MySQL - the goal is to have it as an RPM dependency. But since RPM is nowhere near as good as Debian's apt, it's a much harder thing to do.
FYI, the build is up now.
RPM dependencies: Requires: mysql, mysql-server should be enough to require mysql on the box. Current mysql-in-slimserver-rpm situation is ugly. What functionality do you need that rpm does not offer? Need help with writing a SPEC file? (I am no guru but could give it a try) Songs that did not play before now appear to play. Will need to test some more, but looks good.
Ok. Please see the Unix forums - Al Pacifico is working on a new RPM spec file that includes the proper dependencies. I'm going to mark this as closed. Please reopen if you can reproduce. Thanks
