Bugzilla – Bug 3673
scan setting per music folder
Last modified: 2014-03-12 05:42:15 UTC
This is a follow-on enhancement from bug 607 (ability to define multiple music folders through server settings rather than shortcuts). Now that slimserver code has been updated with the split scanner stuff, I've been wondering if it would now be useful to have the ability to configure multiple music folders within slimserver preferences, instead of/as well as relying on shortcuts, symbolic links, etc. [see bug 607] There are still many users that post to the lists because they don't read the documentation about setting up shortcuts, and expect there to be some preferences. Most music library software has configurable lists of folders to scan. If multiple music folders are configured within slimserver, there may be some extra enhancements to make use of this: 1) It would be really beneficial for performance to be able configure different types of scans on each defined folder. Eg. I have: Slimserver Music Folder\ Phil's Music\ Alex's Music\ Live Concerts\ I hardly ever need to do a full rescan of "Phil's Music", as I only add to this when I rip new music from CDs, so an occasional "look for new music" is all I require. However, I often need to do a full rescan on "Live Concerts", because these are sourced from the internet without decent filenames and tags, so I am constantly doing major updates. I believe it is now possible to target specific folders for rescan by invoking the scanner with various parameters from a command prompt, so it may be sensible to integrate it a bit more into slimserver. 2) Perhaps it would also be possible to provide some option to rescan when browsing down a path using Browse Music Folder? eg. press-and-hold add button when a music folder path is displayed will then ask what type of rescan to perform from that folder downwards. If this would not be built into slimserver directly, maybe I could write a plugin to do this?
Indeed, the scanner.pl program was built with this possibility in mind. However, 6.5 is feature complete right now, so this will need to wait.
Understandable ;) I have no problem waiting a bit longer!
This sounds like what I was suggesting. I am one of those people who don't get under the hood of my computer very often. So when I have to type in the path to my music folder I always forget the format (is it forward slashes or back slashes? are there any dots etc.?) I always have problems remembering the Windows format for the path to my music folder, especially since my Music Folder is on an external hard drive. What I really would like would be able to just browse for the music folder using the folder names and hard drive names that I know, and then just click on the folder and have the software figure out for me what the format is of the path to get to that folder. Many thanks for looking at this. I'm sure that I am not the only person who would like this. Rod Tucker
