Description Jim McAtee 2006-06-16 22:09:46 UTC
On Windows, and maybe on other OSs as well, the SlimServer name presented in the Squeezebox setup uses the name of the machine on which it runs. If you run more than one instance of SlimServer on the same server, different IP addresses, the selection is presented rather cryptically in the form:

machinename (IP_Address_1)
machinename (IP_Address_1)
etc.

I imagine if you run two or more servers on different ports, then the port numbers are displayed in the selection menu instead. It would be a lot more user friendly to permit naming each SlimServer installation. People running multiple servers to present multiple libraries, for instance, might use names like "Jim's Library", "Meg's Library", "Kid's Library".
Comment 1 Blackketter Dean 2006-06-18 08:53:17 UTC
seems like a reasonable request to add a preference for the server host name to be overridden.
Comment 2 Chris Owens 2006-08-18 17:34:56 UTC
Moving over Jim's last query from the related bug (bug 3591), so we are considering the application for this to be running differently-named slimservers on different ports on the same machine?

More exactly, different IP addresses on the same machine. Yes, that's the primary reason for this enhancement - to allow multiple servers to run on a single machine and have them all selectable in the SB setup. Although I still contend that this should not be necessary - there's something inherently flawed with the discovery protocol if it relies upon the machine name broadcast in packets - SlimServers should be better able to uniquely identify themselves to the network.

Let's make the server network setting for Bonjour/Rendezvous naming more general, allowing folks to override the default host name. New text:

SlimServer Name

You can change the name for this SlimServer that appears on players and in Bonjour networking.

We'll look at this post-7.0.
Comment 7 Jim McAtee 2008-08-01 12:33:28 UTC
Any chance that is ever going to be fixed? I still don't understand why anyone would insist on identifying servers by name instead of by IP address. It's easy to run two servers on the same machine, while it's impossible to run two servers on the same IP address.
Comment 8 Blackketter Dean 2008-08-01 12:41:19 UTC
I'd like to see this fixed in 7.3. Customizing the music library name seems like a good idea.
Comment 9 Jim McAtee 2008-08-01 12:50:07 UTC
Thanks Dean. Although one of the desired features of 7.3 and a new db schema may be multiple libraries within the database. :-)
Comment 10 James Richardson 2008-10-17 16:20:43 UTC
Andy: would this be assigned to you? if not please re-assign
Comment 11 Andy Grundman 2008-10-17 16:31:58 UTC
This is trivial. JJ, why don't you provide a patch?
Comment 12 Michael Herger 2009-05-07 06:22:23 UTC
change 26460 - to be found in the basic settings. Will add this to the control panels too.
Comment 13 Jim McAtee 2009-05-07 06:23:57 UTC
Thanks. Looks like this will work.
Comment 14 Jim McAtee 2009-05-07 06:36:19 UTC
Check that. On an SB2/3 I don't have the library names shown, just

SC 7.4 Trunk (ip_address)

Is the machine name still incorporated in the discovery, or does SB2/3 need new firmware to take advantage of this feature?
Comment 15 Jim McAtee 2009-05-07 08:29:44 UTC
Nevermind. Looks like it works as expected. Thanks again.
Comment 16 Jim McAtee 2009-07-06 19:26:12 UTC
Is there any chance that this change could be merged into SC 7.3 Trunk? I run several 7.3 servers for testing purposes. This change is really a godsend for selecting a server/library from any Squeezebox and would make running SC 7.3 along side SC 7.4 so much easier.
Comment 17 Chris Owens 2009-07-07 10:10:39 UTC
7.4 will be released before you know it!
Comment 18 Jim McAtee 2009-07-07 10:20:19 UTC
I'll still be running 7.3.x for testing, since _many_ users will not upgrade to 7.4 for a very long time after it's released due to plugin incompatibility issues and scanner problems that likely will be unfixed by the time it ships. Please add this to 7.3 Trunk.
