Description Rich Hollyday 2006-06-03 10:14:15 UTC
Hi Slim Devices,
I love my Squeezebox! I can't wait to see its popularity explode with the upcoming Stereophile review. Congrats on your well deserved success!

I have SQB3 wireless, unmodified, latest SB firmware, and latest Infrant SlimServer 6.2.2 implementation. I normally use a Power One 5V/3A linear power supply, but this noise occurs with stock PS also. My SQB is about 5 months old.

I hear a high freq noise coming out of the right channel analog output. I guess it is about 8-10kHz, because it only comes through the right speaker's ribbon tweeter which crosses in at 8k and it is clearly audible, not ultra high freq. It is not happening on left channel or digital coax output, noise from those outputs is acceptably quiet. I have not used the toslink out.

The noise can be turned on and off with the power button on the SB remote. The sound can be turned on and off instantly with remote power button. Interestingly, the noise level does not change with software volume control, and music level changes with volume control but noise always stays at constant level.

I have always used SB3 set to its highest volume setting and used the volume control on my integrated amplifier. With SB volume set to max, the S/N is high enough that the noise is not obvious. This week I am using NuForce digital stand alone monoblock amplifiers connected directly to SB and using the SB software volume control. Since the NuForce always work at 100% gain, the noise is amplified to maximum at all times and the software volume control only reduces the music volume, not the noise. So the noise is very obvious with these powerful amplifiers while listening to music at a moderate volume.

I have swapped interconnects, they are well shielded. I have swapped the power supplies. I have swapped in amplifiers, such as Cary tube integrated, NuForce digital, other high-end tube monoblocks. The whine is audible from each. I have tried to move the SB away from other components to no effect. I have connected SB power supply to dedicated 20A circuit separate from the digital amplifiers, no change. I have swapped L and R channel connections at SB to eliminate amp/speaker as source of the noise, and the noise moves to the other speaker.

Any advice is much appreciated. Thank you!
