Bugzilla – Bug 3305
Difficult wireless connect for cold SB2
Last modified: 2006-04-22 19:12:58 UTC
There is this specific behavior of the SB2 wireless connectivity issue that have been bothering me for a while. It may be a hardware problem. I thought it would be good to keep track of this issue by opening a new bug. Before I begin, here is my configuration info... +++ SlimServer Version: 6.2.2 - 7010 - Windows XP - EN - cp936 Linksys WAG54G All-in-one ADSL Gateway + Wireless Router Model: Linksys WAG54G.v2 Firmware: 1.01.22 Wireless Mode: B+G Mixed Mode Wireless Channel: 6 (2.437GHz) SSID Broadcast: No MAC filtering: Enabled Wireless Security: Enabled with WPA TKIP +++ My SB2 always have problem connecting to my wireless network at power up. I have tried reconnect again and again manually using the remote, soft-resets, etc. It never worked. After some time I discovered that the best way to work around this is to power up the SB2 and leave it on, go away for about an hour, and when I come back it would have been connected to my wireless network. The wireless connection would then perform flawlessly streaming music from the PC. This problem occurs only when powering up a cold (left unplugged long enough to render it cold) SB2. In the example above, if it had connected successfully to wireless network, unplugging the power from the wall outlet for a short while and reconnect power this problem would not surface. It would connect to the network in an instant. In closer observation, by looking at the wireless led at my wireless router, I do not think there is handshake problem. The wireless led indicates zero activity during the entire time the SB2 trying to register to the network. I looked at SB2 "View current status" screen - Wireless signal strength showed 0%. Not that there is problem in my wireless network. My Centrino laptop connects to the same wireless network without a hitch. I am therefore suspecting that the wireless module of the SB2 was not active when power up from cold and therefore could not detect any wireless signal. If I leave it powered up long enough, somehow the wireless module would "wake up" and connect. Your advice to this observation is appreciation. Thanks in advance.
1) have you contacted support@slimdevices.com to open a ticket on this, if you believe it to be a hardware problem. This is not the place for support tracking, only bugs so you'd best open that channel to cover the case of hardware. 2) you have this marked as fw29. Newest build of 6.2.2 is now at fw45. Please try downloading and upgrading firmware and check the connectivity again as many wireless issues have been fixed between 29 and 45 thanks.
1) I have not contacted support@slimdevices.com. Because I am not certain whether this is hardware, firmware, or software related. It could probably be due to incompatibility between the Linksys WAG54Gv2 and SB2. I will contact Slimdevice support about this case. 2) I have marked the fw incorrectly. I am running 6.2.2 fw 43. I will upgrade right away. I doubt this will clear this problem as my problem began before fw 29.
this may sound crazy, but try putting your player in the freezer for little while. if it takes longer to get connected, then you almost certainly have a heat related issue. either way, support@slimdevices.com is your best bet. If it is a hardware problem with the device, they'll set you up with an exchange/return. Since you can connect once it's warmed up, I'm going to close this bug. Reopen it if you can find that it's a software/compatibility issue.
