Feature request: MLB Gameday Audio
Last modified: 2011-11-06 23:23:31 UTC
I would like to be able to access MLB Gameday Audio via my Squeezebox 2. I suspect that this is only possible if Slim Devices works out a deal with MLB, because currently the MLB Gameday Audio feeds are not accessible like regular internet radio feeds. I'd like to see the ability to link your Squeezenetwork account with your MLB Gameday Audio account, and then listen to MLB Gameday Audio via Squeezenetwork. There have been a couple of threads about this in the forums, discussing the technical aspects of this. I think there is demand for it. I'm hoping enough people will vote for this feature request to make that clear. And I think this would be a way to tap into a possibly new market. Thanks! Keep up the great work!
MLB has been the most progressive of all the sports leagues to use the internet. I would bet if Slim Devices approached MLB Advanced Media and showed them how only registered users could access the signal, they'd be cool with it. Heck, I bet MLB would like to promote it as another cool, convenient way to enjoy th pleasure of listening to baseball on the radio!
Just wanted to comment that I'd still very much like to see this happen. I love listening to baseball on the radio, but since I'm an out-of-market fan, I'm often out of luck. Help me, Slim Devices! :)
I would love to be able to add my NFL Field Pass subscription to my SqueezeNetwork account
Since Patrick is no longer with the company, howzabout I assign this back to me to figure out what to do with it?
Will review the outstanding SN bugs after 7.0 ships.
I know an exec at MLB Advanced Media if anyone at Logitech/Slim would like me to get them in touch with MLBAM. -Jason (jsnell@macworld.com)
This is my most desired feature
I'm with Mitch. This would be a fabulous feature. Jason Snell has offered a contact at MLB AM. Could someone from Logitech please weigh in on this topic?
I didn't personally try to work the deal with MLB, but I do know they were asking a donk-diculous price to carry their content. While MLB has embraced the internet, they are the most closed, by far, of major sports leagues in distributing their content. I would LOVE to see MLB audio on squeezebox. If you have pull with an MLB media exec, certainly mention it. What you can tell him/her is that the reason we never moved forward with this is the price they were asking was utterly laughable, especially considering putting MLB audio on a squeezebox shouldn't cost _us_ anything. MLB already extracts money from subscribers, and you would not be able to access MLB audio on squeezebox without an MLB subscription. So...we need to pay an exorbitant sum to put MLB on our product to increase _their_ revenue stream? We gave it a pass. It's a head shaker, it really is. In conclusion, Go Twins!
Thanks for the explanation, Ben -- much appreciated. The only part that I take issue with is that last bit. It may have been a typo. I think you meant to type "Go Red Sox!" Anyway, I hope this contact at MLB is reasonable and able to help with this. It seems obvious that it can only help MLB to make their product more easily available to people. On the other hand, they still enforce their archaic and misguided TV blackout rules, so who knows?
I dropped the guy I know at MLBAM a note, just asking why they're not on this class of devices, and I'll see what he says. My guess is that MLB's approach is this: by adding MLB to your device, you are going to sell more devices, and they want a cut of that. Because if you're the only player that offers this feature, you're going to drive sales. So I can see them wanting a fee for that, sure. But I can also see the other side, that being on your device is going to sell subscriptions. I can't speak to how "donk-diculous" the fee they were asking was. I'm pretty sure Apple isn't paying them a cent for being on the iPhone. I wonder if Roku is paying them to be on the Roku Player. It's an interesting question. You'd think ubiquity of availability would be their focus. And Ben, MLB may be the most closed (though I'd dispute that -- NFL, anyone?) of any league, I believe they've also been the most successful at making money off their Internet content. So they've got that going for them. Anyway, I've done what I can to nudge the relationship. I can do no more. I gave it a swing, guys. Go Giants!
I'm a software engineer and have little role in marketing decisions, but I pressed hard for this last year and that's where it ended up. MLB does a lot of very bizarre things to "protect" their revenue, so much so it ends up hurting their bottom line (IMO). The TV blackout rules are a great example as well as this one. Maybe I'll start rooting for the Red Sox if you win the Joe Mauer sweepstakes. But I sincerely doubt it :) I believe this to be a mutual back scratch opportunity (we sell more squeezeboxes, MLB can sell more gameday audio subscriptions) that should have been settled with a handshake. But MLB gave us a figure that was far, far beyond what we were willing to pay for it. Can't help that, it's how they roll. I can tell you that I've never paid for MLB gameday audio because it's not available on my squeezeboxes. If it ever is, I'll gladly subscribe.
MLB is apparently doing quite a few deals for device-based content distribution. MLB.TV service is now available through PS3 and the Roku box. I'm using the video service via my PS3 and iPhone. It works better than I expected. Actually pretty reliable and even looks good on a 50" HDTV. Given these new deals, it might be worth making another attempt at contact MLB Advanced Media to see what kind of arrangements might be made to bring MLB Gameday Audio to the Squeezebox family of devices.
Spring is here again! It's now the 5th season since the initial enhancement request. I'd love for the Squeezebox team to take another look at the possibility of adding a MLB Gameday Audio app to our devices. Thanks.
Unassigned bugs cannot have a priority.
