Bugzilla – Bug 3246
wpa causes SB3 to disconnect from Motorola SGB900 every 15 minutes
Last modified: 2009-06-03 09:41:35 UTC
From Bob Malecki: I recently changed my wireless connection to my Motorola Sufboard 900 to WPA-PSK using TKIP encryption. My Sony notebook connects fine and stays connected no problem. I set up my SB2 with the same using WPA (not WPA2) and it connects to the wireless LAN, but then it drops off the network after 5-15 minutes. Also, no mater what IP I put in for the DNS server, I cannot connect to the SqueezeNetwork. I am having the exact same problems as cjhabs who posted this problem on the forum at http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=22341&highlight=connecting. I'm currently at firmware v37 and SlimServer Version: 6.2.2 . I've done everything he's posted on the thread but still no joy. I specified a server-assigned IP and can now connect to Squeezenetwork, but WPA still drops. I am now using WEP which works with the SB2, but I really need to have WPA working.
I have more than 50 routers in my collection now, and incredibly none of them are Motorolas. Ordering one today.
I was easily able to repro the bug using FW37. It seems to be fixed, though in FW42. FW41 is the latest one released in the nightlies, but it has most of the stability improvements of 42. Does it help? I'll continue listening for a while (probably even let it run overnight) just to be sure.
Subject: Re: wpa causes SB3 to disconnect from Motorola SBG900 every 15 minutes I installed FW41 and still the same behavior, it drops the connection in about 10-15 minutes. Display goes blank and I have to reboot the unit to get a network connection again, then it drops after about 10-15 minutes. Well, mine managed to stay connected all night. What kind of machine do you have running slimserver? What version of slimserver is it? Is there anything unusual about your network that I ought to try to reproduce? What does it say on the 'Info' screen in the config of your SBG900? For instance, mine says: Software version: SBG900-2.1.9.7-SCM00-NOSH Hardware version: 3

Okay, I set up an address control list, and reduced my fragmentation threshhold to 500 (the default on my unit was an IMHO more-sensible 2346 bytes. Watching it like a hawk.
Bob, have you tried turning on the 'Buffer Fullness' display (in slimserver, you have to enable it under 'player options' in the 'Now Playing Information' section)? Do you see that before you have problems, the buffer fullness is down around 0%? I usually expect buffer fullness to rapidly increase to 100% at the beginning of a new song, stay solidly at 98-100% during playback, then steadily decrease as the end of the song approaches (depending on what format of music is being played). With this Motorola it's basically the same, but I have seen some dips down into the 80s which is somewhat unusual.
So after wrestling with it for a little while, here's my recipe for success: In the Wireless section, Network tab: * You said RTS threshold was 2347? Leave that as it is * Fragmentation threshold: set to 2346 (this was my factory default) * Beacon period, increase to 1000 ms (more typical I think) See if that helps out.

Subject: Re: wpa causes SB3 to disconnect from Motorola SBG900 every 15 minutes Sorry same behavior, no joy. I even upgraded to version 42 this morning and still same behavior. Please advise, thanks. Bob PS, I can provide you remote access to both my Surfboard and Slim server if you want. This will have to be coordinated via phone either early in the morning or on Saturday. What about the buffer fullness display? When the unit disconnects, does it display a message? I would expect either 'can't connect to wireless network' or 'can't connect to slimserver'. Have you tried turning on debugging in slimserver to see what it is seeing happen? From the slimserver web gui, go to server settings -> debugging. You should see a ton of checkboxes. My favorites are usage, UI, stream_v, memory, firmware, files, and info. The log data shows up on Windows systems in http://localhost:9000/log.txt Have a look through there after a crash and see what it says! This is frustrating since I have the same setup going here on my desk!

The buffer fullness setting is data that can be displayed on the Squeezebox's screen. However, it's not enabled by default. When your Squeezebox is connected to your slimserver, the slimserver web page will have a 'Player Settings' link on the left side of the UI, below Server Settings. About halfway down the Player Settings page is a section called 'Now Playing Information'. This is the list of items that can be displayed as you are playing a track. The interface has changed slightly from one version of Slimserver to the next, but there should be an option to add 'Show Buffer Fullness' to the menu. Verify it is correctly selected by noting on the display that some percentage (with a % sign) is displayed in the upper right corner. You can change the information that is being displayed by hitting the 'Now Playing' button on your remote. Just to make sure I am understanding the problem you are having, though, this is happening with Slimserver, right? Or with Squeeze Network? Does it happen with both? Sorry I forgot to clarify this earlier.

The problem is with maintaining contact with the Motorola Surfboard900 via wireless when WPA is enabled. If WEP or no security is enabled, no problem. With WPA enabled, the unit goes offline within 5-15 minutes. I've explained this to Kevin a few times already and this should be in my support ticket notes. <html> <body> <font size=3>At 04:15 PM 4/21/2006, you wrote:<br><br> <blockquote type=cite class=cite cite="">------- Comment #15 from chris@slimdevices.com 2006-04-21 16:15 -------<br> The buffer fullness setting is data that can be displayed on the Squeezebox's<br> screen. Subject: Re: wpa causes SB3 to disconnect from Motorola SBG900 every 15 minutes Good news, I found the culprit! I have a the Motorola Surfboard connected to a Netgear 8 port switch which connects my wife's Mac G4, a Vonage VOIP router and SNAP server for backup. I disconnected all devices from the switch and the SB3 stayed connected for an hour. Great. So then I started to connect each device back into the switch one at a time. Ultimately I found that the SB3 would disconnect only when the Snap Server was connected to the LAN. That's pretty bizarre, but why? Well, I went into the admin control panel for the Snap and found that I had NetBIOS enabled over TCP/IP and NetBEUI. I changed the setting so that it was enabled only over TCP/IP, rebooted the Snap and the SB3 and voila the SB3 stayed connected all night. So, it seems that this has something to do with NetBIOS over NetBUI coming from the Snap server. Any ideas? I would assume that this setting causes the Snap to broacast something to all nodes on the LAN and is causing the SB to drop the connection. Perhaps you should contact the folks at Snap to see what they are doing. http://www.snapappliance.com/page.cfm?name=ContactUs&nav=about <html> <body> <font size=3>Good news, I found the culprit! Glad you found a workaround. We'll ask about the netbios issue. Thanks.
Is this bugreport related to this? http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=22963 I recently started using a wireless router AND enabled filesharing. I thought the router was to blame, but this seems to point to the file sharing. I'm changing my settings now and start praying. This bug is very annoying and little documented, so I linked to this report from the above forumthread.
I've disabled netbios, file & printer sharing and the MS client service. No help. Still, after some time the playback stops, screen goes dark. It seems to get worse once it starts happening (it can play ok for an hour and then not manage to play for 3 minutes. A powercycle helps. This is with a D-Link DI-524 wireless router with firmware V2.04Patch05 (Mon, Feb 26 2007). Signal is between 50% and 60%. My device is an SB2. I will now move from WPA2-AES to WPA-TKIP and see if this helps.
Ross: here's another one to look at.
Since this is for a different router than the one exlicitly named in the subject, could you create a new bug, Ross? Felix notes that fw88 has a fix that may help.
Seeing the recent activity here I thought I'd give an update on my situation. After switching to WPA-TKIP, things went much better, so I've written this down to WPA2. Since then I also moved to a new router and upgraded to 7.2 so nothing is left of the original setup. Maybe I should try WPA2 again, but I read somewhere that the AES encryption is probably a bit too demanding....
This bug is no longer about the Motorola SGB900, it is about Snap server and NetBEUI per comment #19. Peter, do you have a Snap server? Would you mind briefly explaining your specific issue to help me determine if I should close this bug and open a new one?
no I have no SNAP server, sorry...
Closing this as invalid per comment #19. Peter, please contact support@slimdevices.com and they can walk you through the wireless issue it sounds like you're having. Please also take a look at our Router Status wiki to see if your particular access point has a known issue with any of our players: http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/RouterStatus If you and support determine another bug is the issue they will file it and we'll take over from the beginning. The Motorola SGB900 we have here in the QA lab and I've tested it to work fine with Duet and an IP3K player. http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/RouterStatus#Motorola
