I just raised a bug whereby the rescan process could cause the mail slimserver daemon to crash:

Seems to me when using a proper OS such as Linux, especially with a proper DB the rescan process should be forked to the background. Hence, if it crashes your main server will not.

The 6.5 release will have a split-scanner.
