This will happen as part of the Setup rework.

this should be reviewed.  I made the change a while ago for persistence, but the feedback was not positive.  Instead, it became a checkbox.  In theory the issue is done, but someone else should close this off or  give direction.

If I recall (correct me if I'm wrong), the reason settings aren't automatically persistent is that developers wanted a way to set them without persistence.  If that's the case, it seems to me the default should be to have the checkbox checked when you first enter the page and leave it to developers to uncheck it if they don't want the settings to stick.

Wasn't there also a command line switch that had to do with persistence of the logging levels?
