Bugzilla – Bug 263
HTTP client hangs, creates huge file when opening MP3 stream
Last modified: 2004-04-19 13:24:55 UTC
When attempting to open an MP3 stream on a remote client on the same network (http://server:9000/stream.mp3) my web client (IE6) hangs, and gradually creates a multi-gigabyte "stream(1).mp3" file in my Temporary Internet Files folder. This continues until all space on the system drive is exhausted. The client is a Windows 2000 Professional SP3 machine with 1Gb RAM and 4.6Gb free on the system drive. The server is Slim Server 5.1.3 (downloaded April 18th 2004), Windows 2000 Server SP4, Pentium III, 512Mb RAM, 28Gb free disc space on the "Music Folder" drive, and several Gb free on each of the drives containing the MP3 files. MP3 files are organized across 3 hard drives, so my Music Folder is a single folder with shortcuts to the roots of each of these three drives. Files are arranged in folders, by artist/album.
Hi Ian. I'm not sure what to do about this. This URL is a streaming source of MP3 for playback in a streaming MP3 player, such as WinAmp or iTunes. It's infinitely long, and IE apparently tries to download the whole thing. You should use the URL in one of the appropriate programs. It's unfortunate that IE doesn't try to do the right thing.
I just tried this with Opera (v7) - i.e. opening an MP3 stream, then trying to play a track. It behaves slightly differently - opens an MP3 stream in a separate window, but still does not play tracks when selected. I'm trying to put together a browser-based setup for distributing music around the house - is there a recommended browser for use with Slim Server?
The issue is that a web browser isn't the appropriate program for streaming music. I'd recommend WinAmp or iTunes. Alternately, you can try softsqueeze, which emulates our hardware player in software. <http://softsqueeze.sourceforge.net>
