Bugzilla – Bug 2514
Problems connecting wit WPA2/AES with Linksys WRT54GS
Last modified: 2008-12-18 11:38:39 UTC
I'm using v6.2 on Windows XP Service Pack 2 (6.2.0 - 4753 - Windows XP - EN - cp1252) with 2 Squeezebox2s (both on firmware v26). I've been using WPA/TKIP fine for ages (since WPA/AES didn't support wasn't there) but thought I'd give WPA/AES and WPA2/AES a test. The ideal setting is to set the router to WPA2/AES and the SB2 to WPA2 Personal. This doesn't work with a Linksys WRT54GS v1.0 (firmware v4.70.6 (US)) - the SBs see SSID but can't connect. Setting the SB2 to WPA Personal: HyperWRT v2.1b1 (based on Linksys v3.37.6) set to WPA/TKIP - OK HyperWRT v2.1b1 (based on Linksys v3.37.6) set to WPA/AES - Can't connect Linksys v4.70.6 (US set to WPA/TKIP - OK Linksys v4.70.6 (US set to WPA/AES - Can't connect Linksys v4.70.6 (US set to WPA2/TKIP+AES - OK Linksys v4.70.6 (US set to WPA2/AES - Can't connect Setting the SB2 to WPA2 Personal: Linksys v4.70.6 (US set to WPA/TKIP - Can't connect Linksys v4.70.6 (US set to WPA/AES - Can't connect Linksys v4.70.6 (US set to WPA2/TKIP+AES - OK Linksys v4.70.6 (US set to WPA2/AES - Can't connect I'm not sure which of those combinations should or shouldn't work. SB2/WPA2 Personal + Linksys v4.70.6 (US set to WPA2/TKIP+AES - This is should work using AES SB2/WPA Personal + Linksys v4.70.6 (US set to WPA2/TKIP+AES - I'm using this at the moment - SB2 set to WPA and router set to WPA2. Not sure how it works but I guess there's overlap in the 2 specs. Thanks.
This fix requires us to update the kernel version in the firmware. Not going to make it for 6.2.1.
To clarify: we're waiting on an OS update from our chip vendor, scheduled for mid-december. We'd need to get that and then integrate and test the new version. Sorry for the delay, we're leaning on them as hard as we can.
I'm using a WRT54GS with Sveasoft Talisman 1.1 firmware. With my SB2 and firmware 29, I can connect OK using WPA Personal / TKIP. WPA2 Personal doesn't work for me.
Please test with the firmware 33 that's included with the latest nightly releases and reopen the bug if you are still having issues. Thanks.
I updated to v6.2.2 d2006-02-17 (SlimServer Version: 6.2.2 - 6245 - Windows XP - EN - cp1252 with firmware v33) and tried again. It still doesn't work so I've re-opened the bug. Setting the SB2 to WPA: 1. Linksys WRT54GS v4.70.6 US (set to WPA/TKIP) - Connects okay 2. Linksys WRT54GS v4.70.6 US (set to WPA/AES) - Can't connect 3. Linksys WRT54GS v4.70.6 US (set to WPA2/TKIP/AES) - Connects okay 4. Linksys WRT54GS v4.70.6 US (set to WPA2/AES) - Can't connect Setting the SB2 to WPA2 Personal: 5. Linksys WRT54GS v4.70.6 US (set to WPA/TKIP) - Can't connect 6. Linksys WRT54GS v4.70.6 US (set to WPA/AES) - Can't connect 7. Linksys WRT54GS v4.70.6 US (set to WPA2/AES) - Can't connect (see below) 8. Linksys WRT54GS v4.70.6 US (set to WPA2/TKIP/AES) - Can't connect The ideal combination is WPA2 Personal/AES on the AP and WPA2 Personal on the SB2 (option 7 above). This almost works - the wizard connects the nework, allows one to choose the TCP/IP settings, shows the SlimServer to connect and then doesn't connect (just cycles through "Connecting to SlimServer..." and "Connecting to wireless network...").
I have a fix that should appear in firmware 37. Will update this bug when it's available for download.
Please try the latest nightly build with Firmware 37 and reopen if you have issues. Also, please note details of your configuration if you have not already.
I updated to v6.2.2 d2006-04-06 (SlimServer Version: 6.2.2 - 6835 - Windows XP - EN - cp1252), with firmware v37, and tried again. It connects as one would expect! Setting the SB2 to WPA Personal: 1. Linksys WRT54GS v4.70.6 US (set to WPA/TKIP) - Yes 2. Linksys WRT54GS v4.70.6 US (set to WPA/AES) - No 3. Linksys WRT54GS v4.70.6 US (set to WPA2/TKIP/AES) - OK 4. Linksys WRT54GS v4.70.6 US (set to WPA2/AES) - No Setting the SB2 to WPA2 Personal: 5. Linksys WRT54GS v4.70.6 US (set to WPA/TKIP) - No 6. Linksys WRT54GS v4.70.6 US (set to WPA/AES) - No 7. Linksys WRT54GS v4.70.6 US (set to WPA2/AES) - Yes 8. Linksys WRT54GS v4.70.6 US (set to WPA2/TKIP/AES) - Yes Combinations 2 & 4 aren't expected to work since AES is a non-standard addition to WPA Personal. Nor are 5 & 6 since there's a mismatch between WPA versions. WPA2 Personal works fine for both TKIP and AES. Nice work SD - thanks.
