Description Kevin Pearsall 2005-11-02 15:16:04 UTC
When using "View Artwork" you seem to have changed the display from pages 1-20
and split them into alphabetical groupings. I can see this appears logical but
in practice it is a royal pain. It simply slows the loading of the pages and as
nothing can happen until the page is loaded completely I find myself with
frustrating silences as I wait for something to happen. This is obviously more
noticeable on pages that have a lot of albums, particularly "QRS" which covers
some 700 albums and can take 2-3 minutes to fully load. Is there any chance of
going back to pages of evenly distributed albums or at least having one letter
per page?

the change was made in answer to a previous request to use the alpha bar.
see bug 1963

I think it is a really bad idea to keep going back and forth on requests (this
isn't the first time it came up)

Yes, that's one thing I just recently noticed about the alpha bar
organization. It insists upon placing "complete" letters onto the current page
and won't split them. So if I have my items per page set at 30 and the 30'th
item is at the start of the "S"s, then it will include all items that begin
with S. For a small collection this is fairly inconsequential. For a large
collection, you can easily have 2 or 3 times as many items on the page as
you've set. One letter per page won't really fix this.

You're absolutely right, but nobody is to blame for that. This should be a
pref, with the choices being either a strict N items per page or use the
alphabar. But... should this only apply to browsing by album art? Probably.

predictable as always. browse by artwork should go away really. there are better
options

i for one enjoy browsing by album art, and in fact, its the only way i like to browse. i use artist, year, album to sort.

i agree it can be annoying for a big letter to load past the items per page amount, but i agree with jim, its a preferences issue.

having said that, i don't see why a dynamic alpha bar couldn't be created that allowed for a number to be inserted after a letter as needed. so if you had a couple A albums and C albums, but tons of B albums it could look like this:

AB12CDE...

granted, you could run out of room depending on total albums u had and amount of items per page...

but surely there's a way to do something like this.
