as a data point, I was unable to reproduce here either.  digital was fixed when
set, variable when not.  Could the players have been synced in the reported case?

could not reproduce at home last night.  i talked to this gentleman again later, had him forget the player, and it appears to be working now...  possible one-off bad pref issue.
