Bugzilla – Bug 2205
Shuffle only tracks with a minimum rating
Last modified: 2011-11-06 23:23:34 UTC
I'd like to be able to set the shuffle feature to select only tracks with a rating of x or higher. This would allow you to use shuffle to play a mixture of good tracks from a large library, instead of picking up obscure & embarrassing crud The problem is that large music libraries, collected over time and with varying degrees of taste and selectivity, end up with a lot of rubbish in them. In typical use, you want a random selection of tracks from a particular genre that suits the mood; when you're shuffling you're usually busy with other things so don't want to have to skip poor tracks and otherwise control the playlist; so you need a shuffled set of just the good tracks. How this might work is that the user sets a 'shuffle-rating' on the server, say '3+', and then any shuffles use only tracks with a rating of 3, 4 or 5 (assuming we're using the iTunes * ratings, which seems sensible). You might also want to be able to shuffle all un-rated tracks to rate them.
Are you intending to refer to Random? Shuffle is for re-ordering an existing playlist or re-ordering a selected list of tracks as they are loaded ot the current playlist. Random is for picking songs at random from your library.
i was thinking of shuffle because it's easy to use: you select and play a genre, and then (if necessary) hit the shuffle button; this works easily from the remote, which is important. Random tracks from the whole library is too wide, but choosing a genre to match a mood is easy & works well. the typical situation is where you want an endless stream of music quickly - you don't have time to select or think about it, you just want a particular flavour of tunes. this is where the slim system really scores over older ways of playing music
This isn't going to make it for 6.2.
The following forum thread may give the OP a workaround to achieve what they want: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=21787 That's how I have achieved this. I'd be happy to provide details on the SQL queries for the SQLPLayList plugin if required.
Dean doesn't work here any more :)
