album tag behaviour
Last modified: 2008-09-15 14:39:24 UTC
I noticed that album tag filled in is always required for proper browsing? With this I mean that when album tag is not filled in, browsing music through artist you then have to select 'no album' which consequently spits out a list of all songs that have no album tag. I wonder if this behaviour can be changed to relate songs without album only to the artist? so browsing for music would have sequence -artist-songs when album tag is empty. I'm using 6.1.2 at the moment
Dan: Shouldn't browsing: Browse Artists -> Artist Name -> No Album -> show only songs for that artist?
Yes it will.
This seems related to the "group compilation albums together" setting, as this is what I use. What I have seen is that when a song album tag is missing or blank, the artist will not show up at all in the browse list. For example, I have a song that has an artist and title but no album, and it's genre is "Christmas." If I browse by genres, I will not see the artist listed at all. I have to drill down to the full album list (as the bug creator mentioned). Also, if I browse by artist, the artist will not show up, since there are no other "non-blank" albums by this artist. If I turn off the "group compilation albums together" I do see the artist. I think that perhaps two new settings are needed. One would be to allow artists who are *only* part of compilations to be listed. The other would allow artists who *only* have blank album tags to be listed. It is definitely confusing, especially in the browse-by-genre case, to not see artists listed that you expect to see (seems like the songs are missing), but having the flexibility to change the behavior would be cool, even when one uses "group compilation albums together," which is a cool feature.
This should be fixed as of the July 13th 2006 6.5 nightly.
