Description Thorsten 2014-08-28 15:28:15 UTC
Please make it possible to save the currently selected genres in random mix as presets. This way it would be possible to quickly change between different genre selections and listen to different random mixes.

Random Mix is supposed to be random ;-). If you want more control over your mixes, you should look into some of the 3rd party smart mixing plugins, such as SmartMix, Erland's playlist generating plugins etc.

Modifying RandomPlay to do what you want would be a major change to the plugin, as today the genre selection is set globally across all players and mixes running. This would need to be changed, together with the way we store information to not repeat tracks etc. Such an effort is unlikely going to happen.

Of course it will stay random. As far as I can see currently it is possible to save the selected genres, so they are automatically selected the next time a random is played. That's fine, but if I want to listen to another genre random mix I always have to change all selected genres manually.
All I'd like to have is to save the selected genres under a given name, so I can simply switch between them.
Example:
* save a selection as "Rock" with genres Rock, Soft Rock, Acoustic Rock, Hard Rock, ...
* save another selection as "Metal" with genres Heavy Metal, Thrash Metal, Doom Metal, ...

At the moment if I want to listen to a Rock random mix I first have to deselect all genres and then find all the desired Rock genres (which is time consuming). The next day I want a Metal genre mix, so I have to do the same again... It would be much easier to just load the previously stored selections instead of selecting genres over and over again.

I don't see a problem in the way RandomPlay is done with different players. All what is changed is the way (and how fast) the desired genres are selected ;-)

Just try to implement what you'd like to see, and you'll understand what the complications are :-P.

As I said before: there are several plugins out there which can do this for you.

OK, I've tried your Smart Mix plugin and it seems I can do what I want with it. It has 1000 options to tweak the playlist for the music lover and it works with Orange Squeeze, too :)
Only small drawback: it needs an internet connection.

Thanks for pointing this out.

I've often thought this would be a nice enhancement to the Random Mix plugin. From any of the player interfaces, it's a lot of work to select and deselect genres. It's only really practical from within the web UI. Being able to save genre mixes that could then be selected from a menu would make changing the mix more doable from a player.

Make it a favorite instead of a preset then it's global . Is that easier to do ?

And there is a trick to set favorites as presets if you wont it player specific ( some direkt editing of the prefs file ).

I don't believe the OP meant "preset" in that way. I think he simply meant saved genre mixes that could be selected by name from a menu. Maybe Michael misunderstood the term in the same way.

Yes, that's what I've meant ;)

Implemented in 7.9.2: save a URL like randomplay://tracks?genres=rock,electro,kids in a playlist or favourite.
