Description Jim McAtee 2012-01-20 11:03:08 UTC
This isn't new, as I see the same behavior going back to at least 7.5.

If you set the option 'List compilation albums under each artist', SBS will list track artists that only appear on compilations. As it should. However, it won't list track artists who appear on non-compilations. I see no combination of options (I also tried 'List albums by all artists for that album') that will put those artists in the artist list.

When 'List compilation albums under each artist' is set, the query to retrieve artists should be relatively simple - retrieve *all* of them.

Is this fixed in 7.9?

When Browse Artists is set to 'two separate lists for Album Artists and All Artists', these track artists from non-compilations _do_ appear among All Artists.

When Browse Artists is set to 'single, configurable list of artists', these artists do _not_ appear among Artists. Same as before.

But isn't this expected behavior? The single list mode is basically an album artists list. And then there's the option to have artists from compilations be listed. But there's no option to have all track artists listed. IMHO this is/was a deliberate decision and is working as designed. Where am I wrong?

I think the problem is largely historical, in that the developers originally didn't know how to treat compilations and the concept of a track artist being on non-compilations didn't occur to them.

Yes, it's worded as a "compilation" option, but why, if someone checks an option to see all track artists from compilations, would they not also want to see track artists from non-compilations? That's the thing I can't grasp.
