Description Richard Davies 2011-12-11 19:24:02 UTC
Overview:

As described in this forum post, http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?p=674675 all Media Server configuration settings are lost when upgrading to newer versions of Media Server on Netgear ReadyNAS devices. In addition, alarms and preset stations are also lost on attached Squeezebox Radios.

Steps to Reproduce:

Follow the upgrade steps located at http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Logitech_Media_Server_on_ReadyNAS Even if you skip the CleanSqueezeCenter steps the settings are still lost.

Expected Results:

There should be a way to preserve settings when upgrading. Ideally they would all be preserved automatically, but as a bare minimum there should be a way to export existing settings and then restore them after the upgrade.

Build Date & Platform:

I've experienced this problem multiple times when updating, including the last time when I updated to:

Logitech Media Server Version: 7.7.0 - r33614 @ Tue Oct 18 11:09:53 PDT 2011
Hostname: ReadyNAS
Operating system: Netgear RAIDiator - EN - utf8
Platform Architecture: sparc-linux
Perl Version: 5.8.8 - sparc-linux
Database Version: DBD::SQLite 1.34_01 (sqlite 3.7.7.1)

yeah, those instructions are misleading. The process should be seamless, but the wiki actually suggests to remove everything before updating. That's wrong.
Comment 2 Richard Davies 2011-12-19 20:53:19 UTC
Yes, but again, it's not just the wiki instructions that need fixed. As I mentioned, I've skipped the CleanSqueezeCenter steps and I still lose my settings when I upgrade.

I'll "fix" the instructions. I never lost the prefs myself, and I never used that cleanup script either. And I probably update the box more often than any regular user. Don't know what happened to your box.

I'll be working on improved packages as soon as the hardware from Netgear arrives.

Thanks Michael! I know it's not a one time glitch because it's happened every time I've upgraded (at least three time) and there are other users that responded to my forum post who have also experienced it.

I have a ReadyNAS NVX. Wen upgrading I never use the process as described in the wiki. Only when the upgrade doesn't work I do follow it.
So usually all my preferences are retained. But when I upgraded from 7.6,1 to 7.7.1 I also lost all my preferences. And during that upgrade I did not follow the wiki process either. This is probably due to a major revision upgrade but even in such cases it would be great to find a way to preserve the server's configuration. It takes quite a while to reconfigure everything, especially plugins that you need to install manually such as the SDT plugin.

I'm sorry to confirm that there was a bug in 7.7.1 which caused loss of the prefs. I reproduce (and hopefully fixed) this issue while fixing bug 17819. Feel free to give the next nightly build (r33760 or later) another try.

I've run dozens of updates over the past two weeks. I consider this fixed with the new 7.7.2 packages.

Only thing left to do: remove those stupid and useless "support" instructions telling people to wipe their settings during an update...
