Bugzilla – Bug 17191
iTunes scan fails a few minutes in, consistently.
Last modified: 2011-07-26 04:31:17 UTC
Created attachment 7252 [details] scanner.log from a failed itunes scan This is a regression that appears to have been introduced in 7.5.1 Scans with "use itunes" checked die "unexpectedly" about 7-8 minutes into the scan. This has been true on every version from 7.5.1 forward, including the newest nightly of 7.6.0 I just checked. With 7.6.0 it lists the ~ 40,000 tracks it's going to scan, and makes it about 3500 songs into the scan. With scan, scan.import and scan.scanner set to "Debug" I still don't see much in the log, though I'm attaching it to this bug. The scan completes when pointed at the itunes directory, without "use itunes" checked, but then I don't get all the playlists I've painstakingly curated using itunes. I spoke to tech support about this problem multiple times around a year ago when I first encountered the problem, and found a bunch of similar threads on the forum, but can't find a matching bug to update so I'm filing this one.
Tested multiple times. Will check with iTunes LP.
since there's been a flurry of activity on this bug, i figured i should provide a little more info if it helps: OS X version 10.4.11 (so I realize this is an older version of the OS, it's running on a G4 mini). System perl is 5.8.6. Please let me know if I can provide any other info (itunes xml file? access to the affected machine?). I've been rolled back to 7.5.0 since reporting the bug and it works ok.

Problem also occurs for me after an upgrade to 10.5.8 (with perl 5.8.8) ..it seems likely that it's dying trying to parse a particular mp3 or part of the itunes file, but with debug logs presenting no information -- is there some other way i can try to identify where this is failing?
