path from browse button - crashes and incorrect scanning

bug: 7.54 crashes when installed on WHS. Scans crash before scan of library is
completed; also when scan does complete (after several successive tries)
information in database is incomplete; e.g. all albums and directories scanned,
but "artist" listing is "empty", even though the tags are correctly written in
song files.

1. Please see forum thread http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=87247
for detailed descriptions from several users.

2. Crash seems to be the way the path to the music library folder is defined in
the SBS definitions.

This works, in SBS Server Settings>Basic Settings screen:
Music folder: \\WHS server name\name of music folder
No crashes, and no other problems.

This doesn't work, and the crashes and other problems happen:

Same SBS screen as above (Settings>Basic Settings). Instead of writing by hand
direct network path to music library folder as above, use the "Browse" button
on that screen and accept the choice it gives for the same library folder:
D://Shares/Music. In other words, the local path to the same folder, because in
this instance SBS is installed locally on the WHS server.

So entering the network path to the music library folder by hand works, but
finding the music library path with the "Browse" button doesn't work properly.

Bug seems to be result of use of the browse button to write the path to the
music library folder, but it may be some aspect of the path syntax itself that
causes scanning to crash and scans to be defective. Writing the direct network
path in by hand works without crashes or other problems with the resulting
scan.

In version 7.53-WHS could not recreate the problem.

I am experiencing the same problem with the scanner crashing. However, hand keying the network path does not solve the problem for me.

Both the network UNC and local folder path methods fail.

Using 7.5.3 I use the default address of D:\shares\Music\My Music to scan for new music entries or a complete rescan, on my Windows Home Server.
The scanner works as it always has done.
In 7.5.4. using the default address the scanner has multiple crashes, will only search a relatively small number of files at a time before crashing, does not always show a cumulative number of music files. It always shows 0 for artists no matter what scan is done.
The same applies to playlist scans.
On the advice of "Firedog" I changed to the default address to Server\Music\My Music and the scanner performed correctly without a crash.
HOWEVER:-
On booting up the server this morning, all appeared ok until I check Squeezebox Server.
I noted that the default address for music had been changed by Squeezebox Server to the default address again. I say it has been changed by Squeezebox Server, because I am the only one with administrator rights on the server and having obtained a successful scan yesterday, I shut the server down (fanless Tranquilpc T7) as it was by this stage VERY HOT!
I have tried to locate fault logs at the location given in "My Documents" but there were none created by Squeezebox Server! However, again on boot up today, there are log files!
I use the default method of downloading the updated program to the home computer (my computer is XP Pro). I then add the program to the add-ins on the server.

Same issue here with 7.5.4 r32171 on an HP Media Server with no anti-virus running. I turned off the firewall and that made no difference. I have had no issues for over two years until this last release. A "Clear Library" scan fails about 90% of the time and the event log shows the exact same message. It always fails on an .mp3 file for me and I'm using server paths and not file paths.

Needed to restart my WHS server today. Got this error report to Microsoft message about the scanner, when SBS started:

szAppName:scanner.exe
szAppVer: 32171.0.0.0
szAppName: scan.dll
szModVer: 0.0.0.0. offset 00004364

note: just ran a "scan for new and changed" as a test. It appears to have worked with not problem.

I can confirm this issue, too!

Running 7.5.4 on a Scaleo WHSv1 and had 0 artists. The try to rescan crashes several times at different times /stops.
Til now I only have "0 artists"

There are no comments in the scannerlogfiles, that causes the crashes.
