Description Robert 2005-06-19 14:08:51 UTC
feature request: IR out port for IR control of other components via slimserver

concept: add an IR out port on the back of the Squeezebox to allow sending of
IR commands to other components in the system. If you wanted a more
comprehensive implementation, you could optionally provide a RS232 port for bi-
directional control of other components using the same concept (dumb pass-
through of codes). In the future, bi-directional pass through of HDMI control
codes would be possible using the same concept. The general idea is network
control of AV devices using an open standard.

why: this would allow the development of open source Pronto like software for
handhelds (PocketPC w/802.11) so that a single integrated interface could
control all components in a system.

implementation: single IR emitter port on back of next squeezebox hardware
device. Add a single slimserver API command to SEND_IR that simply takes the
Pronto format IR command as its parameter.

If you have any questions about this, or would like me to elaborate or help
with a software spec for the remote control software, please feel free to
contact me at rdyas@adelphia.net

Thanks in advance,

Robert

this sounds very much like IR blasting, which would take other IR and report to
the server. xPL or xAP can then be used to send the IR control output elsewhere

Surprise: the headphone jack on SB2 has the necessary hardware to be an IR blaster, but the firmware
support hasn't been finished. Bug 1045 is a placeholder for this work.
