Bugzilla – Bug 16760
24/96 files on Transporter can cause popping during scrolling/vis
Last modified: 2011-05-02 09:55:37 UTC
This thread refers: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?p=599418 Basically as the summary says. Believe it's related to this change: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?p=588751#post588751 With FW85 installed the Transporter is rendered defective in that it cannot play high resolution files without introducing pops and clicks in the playback. I've personally confirmed this with Diana Krall - Quiet Nights [Studio Master 2496] & Keith Jarrett - The Köln Concert [Studio Master 2496].

I did test 24/96 with scrolling and didn't notice any problems, although my tracks are default flac settings, which is -5 I believe. If you disable scrolling, does the problem go away? What about if you use normal-compression files instead of -0?
Disabling scrolling, VU & turning display off makes no difference. Haven't tried to reflac my library as it's not a viable option - it would take me more than a week to identify and reflac all of them. I'll test a track I know I'm having issues with an report the outcome, but asking users to decode their libraries isn't a proper solution.
That's strange, there is increased CPU while scrolling but without scrolling going on it should be the same as before.
You should now have a complete set off Köln concert 24/96 as retailed, the files are not touched by me just packed in a tar file.
Well this bug actually exists in prior firmware too. To reproduce (I used firmware 80): * Put a single 24/96 track on repeat-one mode. * Disable scrolling completely. * Set vis to spectrum analyzer. There is a slight bit of noise when the track is being buffered/decoded during the last 10 seconds of the track. If you disable vis it fixes the problem. I think the audio thread is being starved by the VFD thread as the CPU is being maxed out trying to quickly buffer the next track as well as run the visualizer. It should be fixable, but this is probably a long-standing bug. The reason it's worse in 81/85 is that the VFD thread has more to do than it used to.
By simply doubling the size of the small buffer used to output the audio, I was able to listen to all the Keith Jarrett tracks without any problems, with scrolling and vis enabled.

Interesting. I use a DEQ2496 in the "effects loop" of my Transporter which I've always used with AES/EBU connections. Recently I tried using optical cables but went back to AES/EBU because of problems similar to those mentioned in this ticket, ie. popping. I wonder if this change will fix that too? I'll try and make time to update and let you know.
Thx Andy. Will test & revert.
Ok, I'm 22 mins into koln concert pt1 and not a single click or pop. I think this has solved it (fw 85).
12 mins into part a re-encoded -8 and not a pop nor a click, so if my settings as shown in http://forums.slimdevices.com/showpost.php?p=599830&postcount=55 are ensuring no transcode to wav, then all's good.
Fixed in fw 82.
Fix verified on fw 86 Used 24/96 files with scrolling and large text enabled. Did not hear audio artifacts on the 24-bit files. 7.6.0. r 32383 5/2/2011
