Bugzilla – Bug 16448
Internet Radio "Now Playing" Station Artwork Does Not Display & Station Info from Prior Station Remains at Top
Last modified: 2011-06-13 13:45:50 UTC
Display of internet radio station artwork is very sporadic. Of my 6 presets (for example), one (a Pandora stream) will ALWAYS display it's artwork. Another 2 are not Pandora streams but do provide station artwork. And the remainig 3 do not. If I turn on the radio and play the Pandora stream (displays artwork) then switch to one of the other 2 non-pandora stations that supply artwork, their artwork will display. If I switch to one of the 3 stations that do not supply artwork and then back to one of the 2 that do, the artwork does not display. In order to get the artwork for these 2 stations to display, I have to go to the Pandora preset first, wait for the art to display, then go to one of the other two stations that provide artwork. I connect almost exclusively to MySqueezebox.com, rarely to SBS.
FW Version 9009
This problem existed in prior firmware releases, but has gotten worse with 9009. Not only does station artwork not display, often when you change to another station feed, the station descrition at the top will not update and instead the prior station description will remain.
I rarely use SBS. I wanted a "stand alone" unit that doesn't rely on running a PC server full time (but it's nice to have it available when & if I need/want it). Try this: Set: Preset 1 - http://opml.radiotime.com/Tune.ashx?id=s51172&partnerId=16 Preset 2 - http://opml.radiotime.com/Tune.ashx?id=s124583&username=blatsd&partnerId=16 Preset 3 - http://stream2.u7radio.org:8000/listen.pls Note: Preset 1 - HAS station artwork Preset 2 - HAS station artwork Preset 3 - NO station artwork Begin with preset 1 or 2 (you may or may not get station artwork, it's a roll of the dice that I usually lose). Now press preset 3 (you'll get the antenna tower since this station does not have artowrk). Now return to either 1 or 2. Neither will display it's artwork after coming from preset 3. And yes, sometimes, rarely, it will. Also, on occasion the station artwork will display underneath the "Preset #" box that appears right after you press the preset, but the artwork goes away 3-5 seconds later. Note that this doesn't just happen with presets (happens with favorites too), but used presets to make it easy to refer to. Sometimes, station description text at the top of the Now Playing display will not change when the station is changed. It will retain the prior station's text. Also, I don't know if this is related: Settings -> Screen -> Now Playing -> Now Playing Views The selections for small or large artwork cannot be changed. You can unselect one or both, but when you return to the item, both have been selected again.
I have seen this too, but the other way around. The display stuck on station art of the last station before I switched to Pandora. It eventually (15 min or so)and several songs the album art from Pandora finally came up. Switched back to Internet Radio from a preset and the Pandora album art is stuck. Synced players seems to make it worse.
Updated to major to see if this gets some attention.
This problem does not exist when connected to SB Server. Only when connected to MySB.com.
All items apply to my issue in addition to: lock-up issues with the unit. I was instructed to perform a factory reset. This resolves the problem temporarily. The reset must be performed continuously throughout a usage section. As much as ten times a day, so far. Symptoms include screen locks, unit would not shut down, complete unit lock-ups and loss of ability to access units software. The unit frequently can not be shut down. Reset must be performed. The unit would shut down after turned-on. Reset must be performed. The unit would turn on by itself after manual shut down. Reset must be performed. After reset, as much as half the time I would get no menu items on the display. Then a reset must be performed. After that, the unit may lock-up, may not shut down or may not boot up at all. When I'd have to, perform a reset. I was informed that the Squeezebox Slim is the most stable product to date. I would be curious to see the least stable product Logitech has to offer. Thank you.
Additionally, as much as 45 minutes is needed for the unit to access an S.D. card. When accessing Squeezebox server, 30 minutes is needed in most cases. When logging off the server, the unit would not return to it's default state. Internet radio, Pandora, Last.FM and such. In which case, a reset would have to be performed. This is unacceptable for a $299 unit, in my opinion. Thank you.
My Touch freezes up and loses its connection to mysqueezebox.com. It will display a song which has played previously (not sure if it is the last song before the freeze). I also have a Boom, and that works fine. Both run off the same computer. I typically turn off the unit when I am done. I would be happy to test it by leaving it on 24/7 if asked to do so. This happens every day. Please let me know how I can be helpful in fixing this. best rgds Peter
The screen becoming frozen on a station occurs under many circumstances. It can occur when switching stations. It can occur when the radio is turned off in the evening and turned on the next day. It can occur if you pause the radio for an extended period of time, then resume by pushing play. The screen appears normal, it even may scroll the title of the composition, but what it does not do is change to the screen for the newly selected station. The newly selected stations play fine, but the screen remains stuck on the prior station. Once stuck the only alternative is to reboot. As a result I have to reboot every couple of days. I was asked to return my first SBRadio to see if it was a hardware issue. The replacement has the same issue. The original radio was running firmware 7.5.1 r8837. The replacement radio is running 7.5.1 r9009. I only connect to mysqueezebox.com. I would call this problem Major, as it seriously impacts the usefulness of the radio. I tried to vote on the issue..but the 'voting' screen doesn't appear to offer me the option to do so.
GOING TO BED WITH J0E COCKER. So I woke up my trusty Squeezebox, set the sleep button for 15 minutes, clicked my Pandora pre-set for "Broadway", and went to sleep but the image of Joe cocker from another pre-set was frozen on my screen. Indeed, I woke up the next morning to Joe Cocker staring me in the face. The broadway music went off as it was supposed to 15 minutes after I set it. But Joe's image from another pre-set would not go away until I unplugged and plugged-in again my Squeezebox. That's pretty much what happens when my Squeezebox has been sleeping for a period of time. It is also what has been happening since I purchased the Squeezebox months ago. Occasionally I get no artwork on any preset. Just a title and where the picture would be is the word "NOTHING". Re-plugging it fixes the problem. Trevor in support said I should post this here where engineers like Ryan could see it. So Trevor it is done.
SqueezeBox Radio version 7.5.1-r9009 . Quite often, playing Pandora stations, the song details and artwork won't display. Instead it shows the "Current Playlist" screen, with the word "Nothing" under it. This seems to happen mostly after listening to a podcast or archived internet radio program, and then switching back to Pandora. Sometimes I've seen it happen after controlling the box from my PC using the mysqueezebox.com Remote Control feature. So far, the only way I've found to get rid of the problem is to unplug the box, wait a few moments and then plug it back in. Then the Pandora song details start displaying again. UPDATE: IT NO LONGER DISPLAYS SONG DETAILS EVEN AFTER UNPLUGGING AND PLUGGING BACK IN. THE RADIO NOW ONLY SHOWS "CURRENT PLAYLIST NOTHING" WHEN PLAYING PANDORA. See http://forums.logitech.com/t5/Squeezebox-Players/Station-Artwork-amp-Description-Display-Does-Not-Update-on-SB/m-p/479252 for my original post as GandalfTheDad This is a clear bug and I'm hoping to hear news on a patch to fix the problem.

Am having the same problem with my squeezebox radio. Listening to one station, seeing the previous one on the screen. Artwork on stations available in the past, replaced by grey antenne.
Just wanted to confirm that the same thing happens to me on my Squeezebox Touch connected to mysqueezebox.com. You can see the effect here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=68AuYbIKVVc If any specific log could be helpful, please let me know.
Michael thinks he has seen this as well.
Created attachment 6960 [details] artwork missing on SqueezePlay only Can anybody confirm that you would see the correct artwork on alternative displays like eg. web UI, iPhone or similar app? Attached a picture I took from SB Controller, iPeng and SqueezePad controlling the same player playing the same internet radio station. SBC got stuck at some point, while the others update just fine (within a second), as does the web UI. In this case the artwork information is sent to the player only _after_ the rest of the metadata. If at the same time as I update the artwork information for that track I'd slightly change the track title (eg. adding a space to it), the artwork would update just fine. IMHO SP or the server is filtering out metadata events unless some of title/artist/album is changed. Updating the cover/icon value of the track's metadata doesn't trigger the display update. And as I only see this happen while the NP screensaver is already active on the device (Controller, Radio, Touch), but _not_ if the data was updated before the screensaver kicks in, I strongly believe it's a SP screensaver bug.
Ben - I'm pretty sure this is a SP NP screensaver issue. Please see my previous comment. Does this make any sense to you? I'm seeing this with 7.5 as well as with 7.6.
I'm finding on the radio that after a few minutes the sound stops. This is in addition to the display not showing the station artwork. This only happened since the last update - I connect to the Squeeze network.
Created attachment 6961 [details] patch to Player.lua to trigger playerTrackChange notification when artwork changes the NP screensaver in Squeezeplay updates itself with notify_playerTrackChange notifications. Michael, you are correct that if the artwork comes in a secondary playerstatus update and the track/artist/album text hasn't changed, this will not result in an update to the screensaver. This is because Player.lua triggers playerTrackChange notifications only based on the text metadata, not the artwork data. The attached patch should account for this, but I've not reproduced the bug itself so the solution is still unconfirmed. I have tested against working situations (both internet radio and local music), and it's caused no regressions.
I am having all of the same problems as the others, but I am a Windows 7 user.
== Auto-comment from SVN commit #9114 to the jive repo by bklaas == == http://svn.slimdevices.com/jive?view=revision&revision=9114 == Bug: 16448 Description: sent playerTrackChange notification when artwork link differs from previous update
I applied the patch from Comment#22 to address Micheal's Comment#19. It's checked into 7.6 firmware, r9114. The behaviors described in the many comments to this bug are probably not all the same issue however. If I can get some confirmation from either Michael or a beta user that this bug is fixed, I'd recommend this bug get marked as fixed and remaining separate issues, if any, opened as separate bugs.
I use a Squeezebox Radio, using the latest firmware. I can somewhat reliably reproduce the problem by playing a track from the Rhapsody app and then switching to a radio station via a preset button or from My Favorites. I can also repeat this bug somewhat reliably by playing a station from the BBC app and then switching to a radio station. When listening to radio stations without using apps to access the streams, the problem seems to occur less often, but it does eventually occur. It's more likely to happen the more times I switch stations. Often it takes 5 or more switches to reproduce. Once the artwork freezes, it remains frozen for a long while (hours?). I have noticed that the radio will unstick the artwork after a prolonged period in "off" mode (e.g., just press the power button, not a reboot). For example, if the artwork is frozen when I go to bed, it's usually unfrozen when I turn the radio on in the morning. Rebooting the radio also unfreezes the artwork. I do not use Squeezebox software on my own computer, but rely entirely on mysqueezebox.com, Rhapsody, etc. I hope that helps. Richard
Ben/All - I can confirm that this change fixes the issue for my case. If you're on 7.6 please test with today's firmware r9114 or later. I'm pretty confident that this issue should be fixed for most cases described here.

I'm pretty > confident that this issue should be fixed for most cases described here. So I'm probably seeing some other bug. I applied the patch yesterday, rebooted my SB Touch and listened to some radios in the evening. Today I turned it on, played on of my favourties but NP screen was displaying "Off" in the top title bar and the artwork was from the last deezer station I listened in the evening (just as on my video on youtube above). After 30 seconds the "stopped" screen saver (flickr in my case) kicked in.

Forgot to add: mysb.com remote control looks OK (stopping/playing changes nothing on my NP screen), and as for the Touch's NP screen: instead of pause icon the play one is active (the same situation you can see on my video).
How do I upgrade my Squeezebox Radio beyond 7.5.1? I have version 7.5.1 and when I update it, the version stays the same. I'd like to test the patch/fix previously mentioned to see if it works, thanks.
I can't see that the information playing SBRadio freeze is related to switching from one radio station to another. It can happen when simply staying at a single station for a period of time. Nor is it obviously related to the station I am listening to. The only question is how often will it occur, sometimes it is many times per evening, at other times you can run for a day or two (but rarely that long) before it freezes. As a test I turned on a second wifi source (which I set to channel 1) in addition to my regular one, which I reprogrammed to channel 11). When the screen got stuck as it always does if you will wait long enough I was surprised to see that if instead of rebooting I went to settings>advanced>networking>choose network>connect to wireless network and selected the alternate network. After the connection to the alternate work was achieved the screen became 'unstuck.' But unfortunately if I wait long enough with the alternate network it will again freeze. So about all I have found is that there is an alternative to rebooting to unstick the screen. However it is rather inconvenient of course so I will have to continue resorting to rebooting many times per night! Running SBRadio 7.5.1 r9009 and MySB. I don't run SBserver, although I may try it as I think this is the only way I can try a later beta firmware release? The screen freeze is getting very annoying!
Once more, how do you upgrade from 7.5.1-r9009 to 7.6.xxxx? Thanks!
I'm running with SB Radio and 7.6.0-31421 beta firmware. The screen artwork problem is dramatically improved. I've changed radio stations manually with the buttons on the device. I've changed to Rhapsody tracks manually with the buttons on the device. I've also changed both radio stations and Rhapsody tracks using my Android phone, with an app that reproduces the web-based remote control. Both worked great and the screen always refreshed. I had thought the problem was totally fixed until this morning, when the alarm on the unit went off. When I had turned off the radio the previous evening, I had been listening to an album on Rhapsody. This morning, the alarm awoke properly to its radio stream, and played the radio stream correctly. However, the screen remained frozen on the Rhapsody album artwork from the previous night. I had turned off the radio by pressing the power button briefly -- e.g., to put the radio into standby, not by unplugging it.
How do I get the 7.6.0-31421 beta firmware loaded?
(In reply to comment #34) > How do I get the 7.6.0-31421 beta firmware loaded? Here's how to get the beta firmware. Keep in mind that I'm just a radio user, not a Logitech employee. Treat my directions with a grain of salt. Go to the beta software page http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/index.php?ver=7.6 and download the squeezebox server software for you home computer. If you're running Windows, you probably want the one at the top of the page ("windows server executable installer"). Then install the package and get the server up and running on your computer. Then point your SB radio to connect to the newly installed server on your computer. After a short while, the SB radio will tell you that a software update is available for download. Allow it download and install the update. After that, you can stop using your desktop server software and connect to mysqueezebox.com if you want. You only need the desktop server software so that your SB Radio will see that there is a beta firmware update to download. Keep in mind that this is beta software. Usually that means that it is not thoroughly tested and may have bugs. Our hope here, as users, is that it is less buggy than the previous editions -- but of course new bugs may be introduced in the fixing of old bugs. So, if you use beta software, you need to expect a certain amount of roughness to the software.
Purchased a New Squeezebox Radio on 2010-10-14. (I now own 2 of them) Firmware: 7.5.1 r9009 Confirming issues relating to missing station logos, artwork and info freezes and lack of artwork/info updating when a new preset or favorite is chosen. Behavior is best described in Bruce Lawson's comments and in Miriam's post of 2010-09-04. So no need to repeat anything here. Problems occur if the SB Radio is connected to either mysqueezebox.com or Squeezebox Server on a MacBook Pro running OS X 10.6.4. Squeezebox QA Team: Please write back if you would like additional info.
FYI, 7.5.1 r9009 has no fix in it for this bug. I applied a fix in r9114 of 7.6 firmware, so if you are running r9009 you will see the problem. Flagging this bug for discussion in our next internal bug meeting.
I've been able to repeat the art work freeze bug when turning the radio off while listening to Rhapsody at night, and then waking to an alarm-triggered radio stream. It happens each morning. I'm using the 7.6 beta firmware 7.6.0_31421.
trinkner, a couple of questions, as I'm unable to reproduce what you're seeing. You press the power button to stop the Rhapsody album audio at night...do you press it again or leave it in the "off" state (fyi, as neither of these modes is truly "off", the alarm should function regardless)? What radio stream do you have configured for your audio? I've tried a couple different radio streams for my audio, one that pushes cover art (Radio Paradise) and one that just shows a logo (89.3 The Current), and with either I get the correct NP screen... Do you see the alarm popup window that gives snooze/cancel options when your alarm fires? If so, which option do you select that then shows the stale Rhapsody NP screen? Can I assume correctly that your radio is connected to a local 7.6 Squeezebox Server? What revision of firmware is listed for your radio when you navigate the radio to Settings->Advanced->About? lastly, I think that what's being reported by trinkner in recent comments is probably different enough to be considered a separate bug than this one. once I get a handle on what's happening with that use case, I will open a separate one as deemed appropriate.
a general FYI to those following this bug-- while my initial checkin (comment#24) was checked in on the 7.6 beta firmware branch, users will see it in the next 7.5 firmware update. That is, it will be addressed to end users before a (larger in scope) 7.6 firmware release happens. I don't have dates for either of those releases, but wanted to let you know that what's been already checked in to address this issue will show up in the next 7.5 firmware update pushed out to users.
Hello, I'm at work at the moment, so can't see my Radio. But here are a few thoughts to help you out immediately: 1. I rarely connect to a local server. When I listen to Rhapsody, I do so over mysqueezebox.com. When I listen to Rhapsody at night, it is not connected to a local server. When my alarm triggers in the morning, it is not connected to a local server. 2. I'll check the firmware version at home. It's a 7.6 version. 3. In the mornings, I've learned that it's best not to touch the Radio while I want its stream to continue. I leave the stop/snooze query screen displayed on the radio. I'm groggy and slowly waking up at this time in the morning: I want to gradually gain consciousness as I listen to the news. 4. I listen to KCFR's radio stream. It usually displays the Morning Edition logo, although often it shows this logo only briefly and then returns to the gray radio signal tower generic artwork. (Of course, if after listening to Rhapsody the previous night, I don't see either of those logos, just the album art from Rhapsody.) More when I get home. Thanks
Well, yesterday and this morning I tried to reproduce the bug, but failed. Perhaps something changed on the mysqueezebox.com server? Or perhaps the bug is trickier to reproduce than I first suggested. This morning, the alarm triggered correctly, and continued to play until I manually turned it off. That's great! The firmware the device is running is 7.6.0 r9155. I upgraded to this firmware by downloading the 7.6.0 server, installing the server on my local machine, and then connecting my radio to the local server. Once the upgrade is successful, I stop using the local server. It is not running on my server machine, and I connect the radio to the mysqueezebox.com server. I still do have intermitent problems with radio streams not displaying their artwork. Instead, they briefly display their artwork before the generic radio antenna is displayed. This seems to happen most often when I change stations using the preset buttons, rather than navigating by menu to the stations in Favorites. I can't reproduce it reliably. It seems to happen most often when I play a Pandora stream and then switch to a radio stream via the preset button. I'm still skeptical that the alarm is permanently fixed, but I'll give it another try each of the next few mornings. I've learned to set another alarm clock next to the radio.
There are several other issues reported in the last comment that are not applicable to this particular bug. If these are persistent problems I'd recommend opening separate bug reports for them. I think it's safe to assume that the checkin to fix this bug was successful. This fix is not in the released 7.5.1 r9009 firmware but will be in the next firmware update that we send to users.
Unable to reproduce and going to close. 7.6.0 r9432, Fab4
When is this going to be released? When is 7.6.0? This is a very annoying issue.
I need to install squuezebox server to get my SB Radio to upgrade to 7.6.0? It's currently at 7.5.4 which it claims to be the latest. I don't use SB server as all my music are streamed from online.
