Description mpower9 2010-07-13 19:01:34 UTC
Since upgrading to FW 7.5.1, the fallback alarm no longer sounds. Under FW 7.5.0, my experience was that the alarm would start to play with the internet radio station I had chosen (mysqueezebox.com not SBS). Then it would be dropped (my guess is that this is related to bug #16170) and the fallback alarm music would sound, which did wake me up, although rather violently. The alarm was extremely reliable. Either the program would play or the fallback would sound.

Since upgrading to FW 7.5.1, when the radio station fails to play (frequently), no fallback alarm sounds. What happened? I can no longer rely on the alarm to wake me up and have to set some other device (cell phone) as a backup to make sure I wake up.

I wonder if this is a duplicate of bug 16170. That is, the alarm does start but, during the fade-in, gets cancelled by the spurious power off notification from bug 16295.

Alan - I think it maybe related to bug #16170. But under FW 7.5.0 which initiated the 16170 problem, when the programed radio station was dropped, the fallback alarm came roaring on so at least wake-up was achieved really quite reliably although violently. Now under FW 7.5.1 when the programed station is dropped, there is no fallback alarm. I have not heard the fallback sound since FW 7.5.1 was released.

One thing I have done is to change the alarm sound from "fade alarm in". Previously I think the program was being dropped before it got loud enough to wake me up. This morning I was awake just before the alarm was scheduled to sound. It did go off as scheduled and the program played briefly at the full alarm volume (Vermont Public Radio). Then it was dropped. The effect of the drop was not the same as a drop from a regular playing program which goes to the stand by clock display and is reactivated by two pushes on the play button. Instead instead it went to the now playing display. Since I was still a little sleepy, I did not think to wait to see what would happen if I left it alone because I was afraid I would fall back to sleep if I did not put the radio back on.

This afternoon, I tried the alarm again before writing this. The alarm came on as set (Last.fm) dropped, went to Now Playing and then to the standby clock. I left it alone and awhile later it came back on at the full alarm volume, just as though I had turned it off using the snooze button. (I never have used the snooze function before because I always leave the radio on after the alarm goes off.) The radio stayed on and played the entire track of John Carty's Seanamhac Tube Station (totally brilliant!).

It sounds like this time the fallback alarm did not sound because the Radio thought it was on snooze. However, this does not account for other incidents in the morning where it has not awoken me at all. No snooze, no fallback. Unless it kept dropping the station every time it came on again and before it fully faded in. In any case, I woke up hours after the alarm was supposed to get me up.

I will keep monitoring this errant alarm behavior (and using my cell phone alarm as a back up when rising time is really important). You seem to be zeroing in on a number of bugs that may actually be related so hang in there. I have faith that together all you Logitechs will solve this in the end.

P.S. I still love my radio even with its eccentricities.

Since upgrading the firmware to version 7.5.1-r9218 the back up alarm seems to work fine. It will even sound if the connection to the station is lost after it has started to play and has been playing for some time.
