Bugzilla – Bug 16169
Audio output is faulty
Last modified: 2012-02-27 17:02:07 UTC
Been trying SqueezePlay for a few weeks ago, but not one of the nightly builds has exhibited correct playback behaviour on my Mac, including the latest nightly - 7.5.1r8732. Audio is output through the internal speakers no matter what the settings in the Sound system preferences, it simply seems to ignore this setting. All system sounds on my Mac are set to be routed through my USB sound card, but SqueezePlay insists on playing audio back through the internal speakers. Nothing will change this. I am running OS X 10.6.3 on a spring 2008 MacBook Pro (2.4GHz, 4GB RAM).
Can also confirm this bug.
This bug appears to exist in other OS's as well. OS hooks to change sound output options appear to be disabled.

Same problem here. Running 10.6.4 with SqueezePlay 7.5.1 r8962, audio playback is only out of the internal speaker, it does not honour the system output setting.
Also confirmed. Please assign!
(In reply to comment #5) > Also confirmed. Please assign! Given how long this bug has existed and given how strange it is for standard OS hooks for sound output to be disabled (not just WRT Mac OS but with Windows as well), I'm beginning to suspect that this is not a bug but a "feature." Perhaps Logitech fears that Squeezeplay + DAC output = fewer Transporters and Touches sold.
It occurred to me... Hopefully not... I will use SS for all my applications with DAC output but otherwise will switch... Cheers. E.
Ben does this fall into your lap?
This is not an insidious corporate plot hatched because of fear that squeezeplay will cut into squeezebox sales. But, there are zero internal resources dedicated to fixing anything on desktop squeezeplay. That situation will not be changing in the immediate future. Desktop squeezeplay exists only as an engineering development tool now, and in that regard principally for UI debugging. It's an important tool for internal development, so it will definitely be kept around for that. However, it's not even a beta program now. There are no plans for either launching or supporting it for general customer use. That said, this falls squarely into the "patches welcome" territory. If someone in the community wants to fix this and submit a patch, myself or someone else will look at it. Sorry, that's the best I can do.

I was hoping that "sound output choice" was a standard OS hook that came along free for the ride with most apps unless it was specifically worked around. If that's not the case then it will take some work. I hope it happens, but if it doesn't I can't really complain too much. Overall I am extremely happy with the Squeezebox project and I am grateful for the way that Logitech has generously (and IMHO wisely) made SBS open source. I have a Logitech Transporter, Squeezebox Boom, and a Vortex Box appliance and I am positively evangelical about my setup. I have already persuaded several friends and relatives to follow suit.
Confirming this bug.
(In reply to comment #11) > Confirming this bug. OK - I just read Ben's info. It's still not working in 7.6. Bummer since I just recently discovered SqueezePlay and was very excited about it. Works great as a controller for the Squeezebox (better/faster than the web interface), but the lack of USB output takes away what could make it fantastic. Hopefully someone who knows more than I do about this stuff can find a patch. Thanks for the info, Ben.
Unassigned bugs cannot have a priority.
