Squeezebox Server unforgiving about missing music folder
Last modified: 2010-02-27 08:47:08 UTC
When the Squeezebox Server is started and it for some reason cannot get access to the configured music folder, it exhibit various different problems. 1) Sometimes the Squeezebox Server does not start up at all. 2) Sometimes it does start up (after some extended time), but then the controller cannot access the Squeezebox Server at all. 3) And sometimes it does start up, and just does not show the "my music" option. The last one is acceptable behaviour. The first two are not. This has happened to my several times recently, because I now have my music folders on a NAS, but still have my Squeezebox Server on my PC. It then happens if the NAS has been turned off when the PC is started up. This problem occurs with Squeezebox Server v.7.4.2. I have not noticed this problem on the old SqueezeCenter v.7.3.3.
Additional info on problem: 1) A typical indication that the Squeezebox Server has not started up correctly, is that the Squeezebox Server Web GUI will not start up at all. The internet browser just sits forever, saying "connecting...". The Squeezebox Server Control Panel will start up eventually (delayed), but cannot get info from the Squeezebox Server. E.g. the information tab, merely says that it cannot get info from the Squeezebox Server, and that the Squeezebox Server has to be running for this to work. ...However when I do a mouse-over on the Squeezebox Server system tray icon, it says "Squeezebox server running", so different entities disagree on the status! However, the Control Panel typically soon effectively goes into a limbo state, where it only displays a blank white window. After a very long time (15 minutes or so), the Squeezebox Server Control Panel may eventually get access to the Squeezebox Server, and will be able to display information from this. At such time, the Squeezebox Server Web GUI can be attempted started again, and then it too will typically work. 2) The behaviour above is bad enough, but what makes it even worse is that it will never recover. If the music folder later becomes accessable, the Squeezebox Server will never recognize it, so the "my music" will remain unaccessible. Thus it is very very unforgiving. The only way to recover is to stop the server and close the system tray, and then restarting the Squeezebox Server program from the beginning again will most often remedy the problem. (But occasionally it does not, and then the entire PC must be rebooted).
