Description Mickey Gee 2009-12-22 16:19:36 UTC
The current TinySC status screen at Settings->Advanced->Squeezebox Server is all text based, and not graphically oriented.

For example, here's what firmware r8247 displays when it's scanning my USB drive for files:

Discovering Files: Running (7272)

Stop Squeezebox Server >

Suggest it could use graphical interface to let user know of TinySC state:

- USB/SD card Music library available (Running)
- USB/SD card Music library not available (Not running)
- Creating music library (scanning)

Includes manual options:

1. Start scan
2. Stop/restart scan
3. Stop SB Server
4. Start SB server

Would be great if it could display music library info:

- Number of tracks
- Number of albums, artists, etc.

I'm sure there's more to add ....

Anandh needs to approve the existing page.

Ben says he sent me email about an expanded UI. I will put in some of that info into this bug.

this is the text of an email I sent Chris Owens last week. It doesn't address this bug specifically but does propose a modification to the tinySC UI flow after adding a removable drive (SD or USB) that may help general confusion...

-------------

No idea if there is an existing bug. The existing spec is not complete in this particular area.

It's completely up to us to design this now, so let's just do this.

Here's what I could see presenting after inserting a USB/SD card

Keep the warning about needing to eject a drive before removing it. That's an important message.

then in the menu, instead of one item that says "ok", have several items with actual information as to what will happen if you touch them:
Eject Drive->
My Music->
Server Status->

The only time automagic selection of the local source should happen is if the Touch hasn't been configured to point to a local FatSC. Something to keep in mind is that there is a use case for people attaching drives not for music-- the big one being digital images for display with the image viewer, but also for logging, custom firmware, and whatever else. Doing an automatic switch to tinySC for someone connected to a different local server would be a bad thing.

Also I should note that if you add a second drive while the server is running, that drive _will not_ be used for TinySC. That may or may not require a different set of menu options in that case, but it should be kept in mind when evaluating and testing the UI.

My immediate focus is on alarm for SB Radio, but I can probably get to this early next week.

devil's in the details,

This sounds good to me. I miss having a dedicated UI person to bounce this sort of thing off of, but I can use my own brain I guess, and this sounds way better to me than what we have currently.

I have not heard from anandh that this is a particular priority.

not sure what the 'graphical' intent of this is, but as a long term SC/SBS user trying to understand the STS/tinySC, I find the current status screen unclear.

A rescan progresses through several steps (which may vary depending on what it is). Unless you are aware of all steps and possibilities you cannot determine how many more steps to go or whether the process has 'hung'

My results frequently stops or 'hangs' at

Discovering Files: Complete
Scan New Files: Complete
Scan Artwork: Complete

but the 'Wipe and rescan' option doesn't materialise.

I had been assuming that the scan is complete but now suspect a scan issue.

If the 'Squeezebox Server' screen was clearer that steps were outstanding or that it was 'still scanning' I would have been more aware. I'll progress the scan issue separately, but this is to provide user feedback on this screen.

Ben, this is done, isn't it?

Our media management handling when inserting an SD or USB card is now very different, but this bug isn't particularly fixed. It has a next-to-zero chance of making it to a must-fix list though, so my recommendation for this is WONTFIX now.
