Bugzilla – Bug 15218
Make the radio independent from MySB.com
Last modified: 2015-05-19 13:45:00 UTC
With total dependency on a outside server and the total shutdown of all services once the connection to that service is disrupted for whatever reason, it is of great importance that the radio is made usable if the minimum requirement for the selected task is met. That is, for listening to a radio stream.. it to be up an running. Modularity comes to mind as preferred approach. Modularity as in every failure of a service should not affect the others. My internet connection is being reset at least once every 24 hours, meaning the radio will stop working right there even if a connection to Logitech was established before. Every menu becomes like an empty shell and it very much feels like not a single thing is actually being stored on the radio, not the favorites or any other data that would be helpful for using it. Separate the admittedly appealing features like 3rd party apps, remote control and what might come in the future with the most basic things a user expects from the radio. Those would be: Playing music from radio streams and the alarm to go off - the alarm to work even when connection to the WAN has been interrupted.
> With total dependency on a outside server What you want is to install Squeezebox Server. Not only will it give you more independance from the online service, but it will allow you to access your locally stored music (mp3, flac, wma, wav...) too: http://www.mysqueezebox.com/download

And that after buying the radio so my computer DOESN'T have to run? No, but that's not going to be a solution, moving the problem from your datacenter to my home. Also will using a local server give me not any more independence from services external to the radio. It's the same in blue, no?
you'll understand that you'll need some kind of service in order to control your player? Now if you don't want to rely on mysb.com, you can install SBS. After all we're talking about a solution to keep your player working when mysb.com is down. Which happens once or twice a year.

SBS was fully working all over the weekend, including internet radio and services. As were Classic or Boom. Only one component of the mysb.com service was having issues, the component talking to Radio & Controller. SBS really gives you an additional level of independance.
Of course that's what will be needed when you want to control your player, change advanced settings or use feature enhancing plugins. But the thing is I don't want to. And why does it have to run ALL THE TIME? It's not even possible to switch radio stations after your local server/MySB is offline. Or does the player have such little storage capabilities, it can't hold a few bytes for these most basic tasks? You don't offer a mix, it's either total reliance on a local server or the remote option. How can you not see that this is a bad thing?
Same concerns (see #15919). Where do we stand on this issue ?
