Bugzilla – Bug 15079
Software conflicts SBS with Windows Defender
Last modified: 2019-01-25 12:11:15 UTC
2nd try to file this damn bug report, i lost the ENTIRE (longer) first one b/c i didn't have a damn component selected, (purposely, b/c i have no idea what to put this under and unspecified isn't a choice). when i hit back it was GONE. that shoud NOT happen. FRUSTRATING! anyway... i have XP and windows defender and avast and SBS 7.4.2b i am becoming more and more convinced windows defender doesn't play nice with SBS. see URL. any time my HD cranks or grinds quitting SBS resolves it. just now, upon a restart, msmpeng.exe aka win def was taking 50% of my cpu, (not 100% due to HT), and keeping my HD busy for no reason endlessly. SBS wasn't even playing anything. quit SBS via slimtray and it dialed down to 0% in 2-3seconds. other times squeeze or mysql is pegging the cpu and quitting SBS always resolves it. do any Devs actually "live" in windows and if so do they use XP and windows defender with SBS on a routine basis? this is a fairly big problem imo, as it really affects the performance of the machines and wear and tear on the system drive. there may be other related issues, like using lazy search, etc, but regardless i don't think SBS should be allowed to cause win def conflicts.
Dan do many users have issues with Windows Defender? Should we raise the priority of this bug?
Ping Dan
Chris-- Yes, I've gotten reports back from Tier1 that we are seeing an increase in calls regarding scanning issues where it's Windows Defender in play causing the issue. I hope for more detail shortly.

maybe i can add some datapoints here to what i said above... i notice it the most when first starting SBS, or doing scans/rescans, or when upgrading SBS ver. sometimes, given enough time, the problem resolves itself, but at the cost of the HD really cranking even after the scan is over. i also think lazysearch makes it worse. when the conflict is active, it seems random as to which process pegs the cpu, but its always one of the following: msmpeng, squeeze, mysql. quitting SBS resolves it. i notice that even when SBS isn't playing anything, and the conflict is quiet (or inactive) at that moment, that squeez~3.exe is more likely to be at a whole number in the cpu column rather than 0. i am now using 7.5 and it still happens. while i can't always reproduce it, it seems to happen more than not.
I always wonder how we should fix other software. I really don't see how we can make MSE work with SBS. The best we can do is have instructions ready to tell the user how configure his AV product. Chris/Dan - what do you expect me to do?
who said anything about MSE? i use Avast, not MSE, this isn't an AV issue. this is about windows defender which ships as part of the OS with win7 and vista, and is free and encouraged for XP. windows defender is anti spyware, not antivirus. i won't doubt if you say they are to blame, (are we sure they are?) but surely logitech has communication with microsoft? this problem isn't just going to go away.
yeah, I was confused by Dan's comment about "scanning issues". So... I'm now even more confused as I've never heard of issues with Defender. Dan - is this what you were refering to, or did you refer to MS Security Essentials? QA to investigate.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/defender/default.mspx windows defender can have user initiated scans but it is AV-like in that it operates in the background giving realtime protection. it is in its scanning background protecting capacity that i have problems. it simply doesn't seem to like sbs scans or lazysearch or various yet unidentified sbs / mysql things. dans comment is clear to me, in that its not incongruous to say "scanning" and "windows defender" imo.
btw, all my comments so far regarding this issue are using the "trunk" ver of sbs, the one with a separate mysql. i have not installed embedded to my main sbs desktop yet, so i can't say how or if it acts different with embedded.
(In reply to comment #8) > yeah, I was confused by Dan's comment about "scanning issues". So... I'm now > even more confused as I've never heard of issues with Defender. > > Dan - is this what you were refering to, or did you refer to MS Security > Essentials? > Michael-- by "scanning" I was referring to our music scanner in SBS. The reports I'm getting are that Windows Defender is interfering with our scanner, much the same way A/V software interferes. (although with A/V software we normally see a scanner crash.) In the original poster's description it sounds like a runaway scanner, imo. Windows Defender could be slowing down our DB access and drawing out the scanning process. Why it would cause the scanner to eat 100% CPU I don't know, but... I've certainly heard reports of that with our scanner in the past, having nothing to do with Windows Defender. I also don't know what the answer is, Michael. Maybe there's a setting in WD to allow an exception to the SBS processes, like we suggest with A/V software. Not sure.
i just checked defender on my laptop, and it does have in options a place to exempt folders/files. i'll try it on my desktop. however, MSE has such a thing too, and yet it doesn't work. what would be useful is in knowing what all folders need to be exempted.
