if the server attempts to play something that requires lame, but can't find the
binary perhaps the server should play a build in audio file saying something
like "install lame and you wont here this lame message any more"

this was really just a kneejerk response to the complaint there there needed to
be 'something more obvious' than the server settings, player settings and player
display feedback when it comes to playback problems involving the lack of lame.
 I went with this because its just shy of a slap upside the head.  If anyone
really wants to make an issue of it again, they can open a request for a message
on the front page that can be cleared with a checkbox.
