...à la Windows taskbar.

Let them pop up when the big knob is used or a button pressed, but go away and display only artwork otherwise.

That would be awesome :)

Or maybe vice versa.  By default display the info bands, but when the wheel is turned (Radio), hide the overlays on top and bottom.  Turn the wheel another click and display them again.

A nice visual effect might be to slide them on and off the screen.  It might also be desired to remember the setting until it's adjusted again.
