Description mojojojo 2009-10-06 11:14:43 UTC
This post is to notify of several problems with the new Squeezeplay software. I upgraded to 7.4.1 server on ReadyNas Duo. This is specifically about functionality that does not work, and various troubleshooting I've done and a workaround or two that is fully reproducible. Setup is: Squeezecenter 7.4.1 installed on ReadyNas Duo w/1GB RAM. Squeezebox 2 hardware (now called Classic) on wireless N network. Squeezeplay software controller 7.4.1 from nightly build on Windows Vista 64bit PC.

1. The default menu for the Squeezeplay software controller does not connect automatically to my PC player. For the PC users out there, this is non-intuitive; the default player should either be selectable and remembered, or just default to the PC player like in 7.3. I've seen a bunch of posts from confused users that is a direct result of this problem with not defaulting to a specific player on startup. I can select this player from the 'Choose Player' menu item, but a single click does not work. Must firmly 'double click' the menu item, and then I have access to the player. Most other items from the menu work with a single click. Also, the Up/Down arrows on my keyboard do not work (they used to work on 7.3), but left/right arrows do.

2. More importantly, synchronization does not work anymore. It worked fine on 7.3. While my squeezeplay software does indicate that synchronization is working (with album art consistent across players), as soon as I synch, there is no sound from my PC SqueezePlay. The sound works again as soon as I unlink the SB Classic and the SqueezePlay, and restart squeezeplay. Both the software and hardware players can play streams from the server at the same time just fine but only if not synched.

Thanks, mojo

when you say 'new Squeezeplay software' are you talking about "SqueezePlay: Windows Executable Installer" ??

Yes, downloaded Oct 3 from the nightly build. I also tried the Oct 2
build, same problems. Thanks, Phil

Thank you for the report, in the future please open a new bug report for each specific error. Multi bug reports like this are hard to fix

1) This is by design, won't fix
2) This is the nature of a software player, it will NOT sync properly. Syncing will be removed in the final product

If you feel strongly about either of these and would like to see them as features of the Desktop Player (when it releases) please open new bugs, 1 per issue, and we will target them appropriately.

Thank you for your replies. I am extremely disappointed with the
decision to remove synch from the desktop player. I do feel strongly
about keeping synch (however flawed) in the desktop player. My doctor's
office requires having multiple sources of audio (both hardware and
software), and previous versions of the player have worked just fine
with synching, so not sure why you would remove this feature. Many
owners depend on this feature of the desktop player, and like me bought
into the whole slim devices hardware system with the expectation that
some form of desktop player synch would be available. I've heard all of
the cautions about beta and free software and so forth - I'm simply
stating the reality that many users have reliably and regularly used
synch from a pc player (offered by slim or the community), and deleting
that function will cause much hardship for us.

There were several bugs listed. I will put them on bugzilla,
individually, when I have some time. Again, thank you for your
consideration and time. Phil
