textArea probably can be stripped out.
i'd like to understand how/why this got broken though

should have mentioned that SP code is expecting all lowercase "textarea"

Description: remove upgrade message that was inserted to deal with firmware/SC mismatch back around the 7.0/7.1 timeframe
it serves no purpose now.

Michael, I'm not going to be very insightful on why we had textArea and textarea in the squeezeplay code, I do not remember its history. I scanned through the entirety of the server-side code and found no other use of textArea.

I removed the item param textArea from the wiki page on SC/SP interface
