Bugzilla – Bug 14586
Squeezebox outputs loud white noise and crashes when streaming OGG/Vorbis
Last modified: 2012-05-20 04:35:19 UTC
My squeezebox sometimes crashes when streaming OGG streams from online radios like the Norwegian Radio NRK P3 on this address: http://radio.hiof.no/nrk-petre-172.ogg.m3u It happens the following way: -Radio is playing (using analog outputs), suddenly goes quiet and starts outputting loud white noise -Continues with bursts of white noise (quiet between the bursts) for 3-4 seconds -Restarts I suspect it might be happening if the buffer goes empty, but I haven't been able to provoke it to happen and monitor it. Using 802.11g WLAN on a 6mbit internet connection with full signal strength. It has happened with several firmware versions over the last 6 months, and my guess is that it is probably due to some bug in your ogg/vorbis decoding algorithm or buffer handling. It does not happen on other streams tested such as WMA/MP3 when used with Napster/Rhapsody, neither on other MP3 streams added as favorites. The reason that I file it as a bug is that it might potentially harm loudspeakers and/or ears (if used with a headset). Regards, Svend Torgersen
More comments: Happens when streaming through squeezenetwork.com / mysqueezebox.com. Haven't tried to stream through Squeezecenter.
Please attach a sample file that produces this error
(In reply to comment #2) > Please attach a sample file that produces this error It happens when I -stream- ogg/vorbis, therefore I have no file to provide. With the stream mentioned above it has happened from several times a day to over a month without any incident. The reason I believe it might have something to do with the buffer is that the Squeezebox some times have given a "out of buffer" error when using the same stream and then just stopped playing -anything- until i rebooted the device.
Thank you for the clarification, I miss read the bug. Does this happen with other OGG streams? or just the one listed. Steven: your thoughts on this?
I haven't used other OGG streams so I can't say. (Only use this instead of the FM radio due to the high bandwidth). Haven't experienced it on any other streams that I have tried. My problem seems similar to the ones posted in the "See also" section but which uses FLAC and MP3, so this bug could perhaps be merged with that one. They are also connected with wireless, so my guess is that there might be some situation in which the buffer goes empty due to a high packet error rate or a sudden connection loss which leads to the noise. As in the "see_also" case I added, the volume seems to peak with the "volume meter" at maximum. The wireless routers I have used is D-link DR-615 and DR-635. I tried to reboot the DR-635 while streaming music, this worked OK. (Seems like volume is turned down when the buffer suddenly goes empty, and then the connection is lost. I'm sorry I can't be at any more help as it happens only every now and then. The hangup and restart is not so serious in itself, but the noise is more serious due to the possibility of hearing injuries and expensive hifi equipment.
Svend could you share more details on exactly how frequently you see this? We're trying to get an idea of what is involved in reproducing this bug.
Over the past 6 months, maybe 10-15 times. It has varied from several times in a few minutes to a single incident during over a month. The times when it happens frequently, I have just turned it off and upgraded the firmware (Which haven't helped). The problem is usually gone by the next day, so as I see it is has to happen either if the stream I'm listening to is encoded/decoded incorrectly or if there is a wireless/buffer issue. These two are the only "environmental" variables that changes in my setup from day to day, the rest is constant. BTW: I see that there are updates/bugfixes to the versions of both libogg and libvorbis which is used in SC 7,4. Are they used by SN as well? Could be a possibility, but not likely as the other bug(8123) have the same problem. My two electrical-engineering cents in reproducing the bug in a controlled environment is to listen to a high-bitrate ogg stream in a 802.11g network. I would especially try to combine the streaming with traffic in neighboring 802.11g channels and a 802.11n network with lots of traffic on top of that:) A lot of 2.4ghz equipment has trouble operating close to a 802.11n router so it's worth a try.. --Svend
I listen to a 192k Vorbis stream almost every night and have never heard this issue. It will likely be very difficult to track down. :( BTW, SC doesn't use libogg or libvorbis. And the ip3k firmware runs a port of Tremor.

It will likely be very difficult to track down. :( I guess so, seems like it is hard to even produce it. I will try to tweak a little on my WLAN to see if I can provoke it too happen, except for that I'm sorry I can't be of more help. It just worries me to use my SB3 on 1k$ loudspeakers if something like that should happen when I'm playing loud :) > > BTW, SC doesn't use libogg or libvorbis. And the ip3k firmware runs a port of > Tremor. OK, just saw the libs on your SVN (http://svn.slimdevices.com/slim/7.4/tags/7.4.0/vendor/sox/) and made an (clearly mistaken) assumption :)
