Thumbnail not displayed with alternate .jpg file

Most of my artwork is stored as covers.jpg in the album directory. However, I have also used default.jpg as a placemarker in Browse Artwork for albums which don't have cover artwork. Server Settings -> Interface -> Artwork is set to default.jpg 1) on a Windows file system, a shortcut called default.jpg pointing to a 'real' .jpg doesn't appear to be followed. 2) even with the 'real' default.jpg present, the thumbnail never seem to get created, even though the cover is found when browsing to the album details.
do you have d_artwork logs for the given albums that fail to find default.jpg?

I've tried slimserver set to group disks and not - presently set to group. Note that all my other dirs have a cover.jpg which gets picked up fine-ish - I assume that ss looks for the standard names in addition to the specified name (which is what I want). It would be good to know what order it searches in. I seem to have problems consistently generating the correct thumbnails after a rescan / wipe cache in general - but I haven't found anything consistent to report and it usually seems to come right in the end. This one is persistent though ...

this sounds liek that same problem reported a couple times in a previous bug (1193). The images are cached by the browser across scans, when id's for an album may change. this cuases the wrong image to show. if you right click on the thumbnail, choose view image, then reload that image, you get the right one for those cases. as for default.jpg not being found, it is either part of the same problem, or i'd need to see d_artwork during scan showing where it should be found, but isn't.
I though that was the d_plugins output? Soul Searching is the album in question - it a compliation with Disk 1 and Disk 2 in seperate dir, so I'm not sure why it's so hung up on Disk 2 and Teddy Pendergrass in particular. If you want me to do anything more specific, you'll have to spell it out I'm afraid! email me directly on <firstname>@<lastname>.flyer.co.uk if it's easier.
d_artwork is specific to the artwork handling, as opposed to debug for plugin API. the filenames used in the Artwork and Thumbnail settings take precedence over the standard names (at least, it should). You will need to have the filename set for both settings. the help section lists the standard filenames and the order of precedence. the variable naming is currently broken, but default.jpg should work. what I'm seeing in the first log looks like a simple retrieval for a browse_artwork load. thumbnails are only grabbed during the file scan so it would need to be after a wipe cache or during a rescan. What I was looking for would be test like "Looking for image files in...". I would suggest setting d_artwork, then triggering a wipe cache. The log will be very large (depending on library size, but only need the section for Teddy Pendergrass really). If what you pasted already is a wipe cache, then that is definately strange. It certainly used to be a lot more chatty than that. I'll give this a test on my smaller setup in the morning.
OK, got it! You HAVE to have thumbnail set to 'default.jpg' as well. I'd wrongly assumed that thumbnail would use default.jpg because I'd defined it for the main Artwork. The Windows shortcut link doesn't work though - don't know if *nix soft links work. Thanks for your help.
perfect :) so, do you consider this fixed or would you prefer to keep this as an enhancement to enable shortcuts to be used? The wrong thumbnail issue is part of 1193.
Fixed (if it was ever broken). I can live without the windows link. Thanks for the tip on the 1193 work-a-round.
There are 536 bugs in the database with targets of '---' that were fixed prior to new year 2006. I am setting them to targets of 6.2.1 to keep them from showing up in my queries.
