Currently manual brightness control is the default.  Per the bug meeting (and Richard) this morning, we need to set the default to automatic (using the ambient light sensor) in the 7.5 branch (trunk at the moment?) so that the beta users get it ASAP.

Felix, I see you're on the default cc list for this component.  Should this be assigned to you?

This bug has been marked fixed in a released version of Squeezebox Server or the accompanying firmware or mysqueezebox.com release.
