Bugzilla – Bug 14133
Squeezebox Server fails to start on some versions of Windows
Last modified: 2009-10-06 13:17:00 UTC
Follow up from bug 12030. Had new Lenovo S10e Netbook with Windows XP Pro SP2 installed. Nothing else installed on it. Installed recent versions of SB Server (Sept 14 or 15 or 16). Installed OK, but failed to start up. Would begin to start, and then would fail silently. Attempting to "Open Control Panel" would result in Logitech Squeezebox logo displayed, but then the control panel would never appear on the screen. Tried install PDK 5.10 on it, but that didn't change symptom. Installed nightly of 7.3.4 and it worked just fine. That version of SC now running on that Netbook and serving music to players in my home. Ran SB Server on Windows command line. See log of failure.
Created attachment 5872 [details] Log of SB Server starting from XP command line
As mentioned in the other thread too... I haven't been able to reproduce this. Is there some Antivirus or similar installed on that box? If this is for real (which I still don't believe ;-)) then we'll have to fix it for 7.4
Michael is downloading a VM I posted to eng that reproduces this bug 100% of the time. In this VM I can uninstall 7.4 and install 7.3.3 and it will start fine. I hope this image works for you this time. :)
Ross, That VM wouldn't start. I think it's a clone of some other VM and is looking for its parent disk or something. Maybe that's why you thought it would be bigger than these 800MB.

Turns out we need to install some VC runtime DLLs. I'll include them with the Windows installer.

Try to figure out whether it's already installed or not. Will still fail to detect some other builds of the runtime files.

Mickey - as of revision 28601 the Windows installer should now correctly install the Visual C++ runtime libraries if needed. I've uploaded a copy to http://eng.slimdevices.com/~michael/ (until the build hosts are back). Please give it a try.
I upgraded my Lenovo XP SP2 S10e netbook from 7.3.4 to 7.4 recent nightly. Installed and started OK. Noticed that it installed the VC++ 2005 dlls. Was able to open Control Panel properly now. It's now running Squeezebox Server and scanning my music library.
== Auto-comment from SVN commit #28607 to the slim repo by michael == == https://svn.slimdevices.com/slim?view=revision&revision=28607 == Bug: 14133 Description: don't run the VC runtime installer when in silent mode. People who are installing silently either are on a WHS (where the runtime is available anyway, though potentially in a different version) or are power users who should be able to install the file themselves. We can't run the installer on WHS, as you can't run two .msi installations at the same time. Thus calling this installer from our own .msi results in an error message.
Working for me too, thanks Michael!
