Description Ben Gladstone 2005-04-21 07:23:03 UTC
allow a remote user to administer a squeezebox:
- reboot the sb: the same functionality as holding down the red button on the
remote.
- change the sb's setting for the IP of the slimserver.

we can assume that the remote user has access through any firewall

the need for this is to make it easier to support a squeezebox installation,
particularly where the sb and ss are on different networks. currently, we have
to ask (typically) shop assistants to reboot an sb (ok, but an aggravation) or
manually configure the ss's ip address (horribly painful...)

this will greatly enhance the appeal of the sb to commercial customers such as
retail chains.

the ideal is a box that, as long as it's physically plugged in to power, network
and amp, will always keep itself working - a self-righting lifeboat approach.

thanks!

You should be able to

Not sure why you need remote rebooting, is there another problem you are trying to fix?
As far as changing the IP address of the server, that may be possible in a future version. Would it be
helpful (as an interim solution) to be able to use a textual domain name instead of an IP address and
set that once and never need to change it?

remote rebooting: sometimes this seems to be the solution to a s'box not
connecting to the server - i'm not sure what the underlying problem(s) are, as
we usually reboot as the first step in fixing any computer related problems... A
reboot on sending a magic packet would be very handy

using domain names as well as IP addresses: yes, this would be useful and in
line with good internet practice

changing domain/ip address: yes, even with domain addressing this would be a
useful feature, but not high priority

i'm appealing for a small (?) feature that would make it far easier to support sboxes across large chains of remote retail shops: remote config of the server IP on a sbox; 'remote' needs only to be from a pc on the local network that the sbox is also on - even a magic packet approach (wake-on-lan style) would be fine

i've just spent 30 mins on the phone talking a customer through changing a sbox's setting for the IP of a remote slimserver... v slow because user was a non-technical member of staff in a luxury LA boutique... they had tried to fix a dumb sbox by installing slimserver on a local pc, so the sbox then found that instead of the remote server with the real source of tunes...

we (an IT support co) have retail clients who love the control of the music in their shops that slim offers, and this one enhancement would make a big difference in ease and speed of support... and encourage us and others to sell many more boxes ;)

Dean doesn't work here any more :)

All new Squeezebox products are likely to be based on the SqueezePlay platform.
We do not plan to implement any further enhancements to the ip3k firmware or
which are targeted specifically at ip3k-based products.
