Description ndijulio 2009-09-04 10:58:41 UTC
The current shuffle settings read:

1. Off
2. *Song* - shouldn't this be playlist? How would you shuffle a song?
3. Album

Seen on Baby r7402

Cc'ing Ben and Co...

I don't really find it confusing, and it's consistent with IP3K which says "Shuffle by Song" and "Shuffle by Album". Missing here is the word "by"

Not a P1. Will need to consider the length of the string for PLAYLIST in other langs before making this change. Choice items are a problem in foreign languages.

The problem is that shuffle and repeat should share the same language/terminology, no?

If you edit Repeat (that is the right below Shuffle) it toggles between Off, Song, and Playlist. This is extremely confusing.

How is repeat a special case or any different?

Actually no, the functionality is different. You can repeat a song over and over again, but you can't "shuffle" the same song, can you?

Groups of items can be shuffled. Single items cannot.

Groups of items can be repeated, and single items can be repeated.

Having said that, the terminology is confusing. I will look into how other products handle this issue.

The shuffle settings just need to be plural, while the repeat settings are singular. That means 'song' and 'album' need to be 'songs' and 'albums'.

Shuffle Off
Shuffle Songs
Shuffle Albums

Repeat Off
Repeat Song
Repeat Playlist

I doubt that many other products have a shuffle albums, as it's of very limited use (why not shuffle artists or shuffle genres?). Most just have shuffle On or Off. That's one of the things that makes the shuffle icons so difficult to decipher - I can never figure out (or remember) what the third icon could possibly be used for.
Comment 6 Weldon Matt 2009-10-01 16:34:07 UTC
Why not just kill the "shuffle by album" feature and have the default be shuffle "on" or "off." That's the best user experience here I think. Any fix that tries to describe this behavior in simple words is going to be a minimal improvement at best, since the feature itself is pretty bizarre.

Great feedback Jim. I would second removing the multiple shuffle "feature."

Well, I'm afraid I was wrong. :-) I just picked up my iPod Nano 2G and the settings are:

Shuffle Off
Shuffle Songs
Shuffle Albums

Repeat Off
Repeat One
Repeat All
