Bugzilla – Bug 13777
Controller playback: crackles / very short dropout
Last modified: 2009-09-17 01:15:11 UTC
Some people are facing audio dropouts with the controller playback. These are very short so that it's more of a short crackling/stuttering, like a CD/vinyl with a scratch. These don't turn up, when playing the exact same album with the SB-Receiver in the same room. Also FW6038-(7.3.3)-controller-playback didn't have this issue. That's why I don't think its network related. Also see forum: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=67045 I'm currently running SC 7.4, r28352 on WinXP, FW7330 on controller.
I wonder if this is SqueezePlay or Controller specific. Richard is there any logging that can be turned on that might help identify what the cause of the crackles are?
I just tested again with latest 7.4 software + Controller FW (downloaded yesterday) and still have crackles from time to time. I just reverted back to 7.3.3 firmware to double check, what the behaviour is there and again I can't get this effect there. So that's why I still think its neither controller nor network, but just a squeezeplay-issue. I'd be happy to provide any more information or do some tests.
It got worse after updating to 7.4.0r7571, now I have these dropout nearly every 5 secs. Tested it with a ReadyNAS and a Vista PC both running on build 28538.
Please download and test SqueezePlay to see if it has the same crackling noise or not. IMHO this is a hardware issue, not a SqueezePlay issue. http://downloads.slimdevices.com/nightly/?ver=7.4

I can confirm that audio playback on the SBC with 7.4 is not good. I have been one of the lucky ones where playback on the SBC works very well for me on 7.3.x, even with FLAC. Today is the first time I've tried 7.4 (r7571) and SBC playback glitches/stutters every few seconds. I tried FLAC and MP3, they both stutter. I tried the latest SqueezePlay, playback doesn't stutter on that.
