Description Dan Evans 2009-08-07 15:25:09 UTC
While entering in text for an e-mail address, there is no persistent placeholder in the list of characters to complete your entry. That is, the little blue right-facing caret icon disappears if you move the knob at all.

Example:
 * Enter in 8 characters of text
 * After the eighth character you have the blue caret icon
 * Turn the knob at all
 * The caret icon disappears and you cannot get it back

 * The only way to fix this is to add a character and then delete it, which is silly.

I'd argue this is unintuitive and presumes too high a level of accuracy.

Assigning to Noah, not because he has to solve it, but because I want to discuss it with him when he gets back...

To be fair, this is actually incorrect - you can press the "back" button to make the cursor re-appear.

I won't argue with this necessarily.

Retargeting for 8.0.

Issues to consider:

- it's too late for this to make MP, which is what would be required for a fix to be added to all text entry screens.
- this behavior is exactly the same behavior we've had since the Duet was released. So this isn't a new bug at all. I'm NOT claiming it's super-intuitive but it will be familiar to existing users, and certainly shouldn't cause any more problems than it has previously.
- there are actually TWO workarounds in the case that someone who is "done" accidentally starts moving the scroll wheel:
   - enter a character and then delete it (very annoying I know)
   - hit the back button, which causes the ">" to reappear
- Implementing this "fix" has side effects that would require more work (would probably need to rethink the ">" character etc).

As a general point, I'd like to say that there are hard limits to how great this interface can be given the constraints here (the buttons on the devices/remotes we have can't be changed; text entry has to work with 7-8 different interfaces; etc). We've already made several improvements for 7.4. Taking things much further is going to require hardware changes in future products (which is actually quite likely to happen, based on recent conversations with Matt C. and the product team)

Matt- reassigning to you to target for post release improvements to text entry.

After looking at some user setups over the past week, I'm bumping this up to P1. We can't fix MP but people indeed are getting stuck here and we should fix ASAP.

Proposed solution is to have the green arrow exist as a character in the list of selectable characters (this would be in addition to current behavior).

I understand this may not make it in to 7.5. Please reprioritize as needed. Assigning to Ben.

sorry, but focus on 7.5 is not SBRadio. I will make this 7.4.x P1

my process right now is:

fix all 7.5.0 P1 bugs for Fab4 release
triage 7.4.x P1 and 7.5.0 P2 and determine which bugs should be worked on next (fyi, right now top of that list is very likely to be SBRadio Alarm clock)
Comment 8 Chris Owens 2010-03-15 18:08:14 UTC
7.4.x milestone is in the past

I don't expect there to be any movement with this bug, so I'm closing it.
