SqueezeCenter checks for software and firmware updates only when it starts and then at twelve hour intervals. It would be nice to have a manual means of checking at any time by using a button in the Settings pages. It should appear on the Settings > Advanced > Software Updates page, but might also warrant being added to the Basic Settings page.

I suppose the way it would work is:

1. User clicks "Check for Updates" in the web interface.

2. If any new updates are found, then a dialog box appears, with an option to download them now or to cancel.

3. Once a firmware update has completed downloading, notifications would be given on the appropriate players.

This is a GUI request

This existed in the pref pane but then it was taken out. If we keep it, it should be in the pref pane, not the web UI.

Assigning to Michael so he can comment if needed. We had a design for this, and it was working, so adding it back shouldn't be a big deal.

We deliberately decided to keep the update feature simple and stupid. If
you want automatic updates - enable the feature. If not - download
yourself.

IMHO this can be closed with "wontfix - design decision" unless somebody
decides to change the design again.

How many software packages have you ever seen in which an update-from-web mechanism was implemented that did NOT have a manual "Check for Updates" link or button? I can't think of one.

The element of complexity here is introduced by the automated updates, with notifications all the rest, not by manual updates.
