Description Andy Grundman 2009-07-28 14:48:22 UTC
This is just MHO, but I think the default Fab4 wallpaper (Encore) is too bright at the top, and so the white text that is there is hard to read. Should we use a darker wallpaper, maybe Sonata?
Comment 1 Weldon Matt 2009-07-28 14:56:09 UTC
I've noticed this too, and others have mentioned it as well.

I think teal is the right color for the default wallpaper, but I agree that it gets too bright toward the top.

Kinda tough since I think Noah is using our "official" teal here.

Encore is and should remain our default. If you would like to rework the teal color then we need to do it be the end of day tomorrow. All assets are scheduled for completion on the 29th.

Can someone paste in any feedback from the forums talking about this?
Comment 3 Weldon Matt 2009-07-29 10:11:24 UTC
Noah, I think this was general feedback regarding readability. I don't think it's the end of the world either way, but Andy has a point so I chimed in.

On Fab4 the letters, drop shadow, and viewing angle all make the text easier to read. But I'd agree that on baby the top line or two gets harder to read from a few feet out.

I would not react to this bug just yet, but maybe ponder it. I agree this is/should be the default wallpaper. It's a question of whether the gradient should get all the way to THAT teal underneath the lettering.

Changing to enhancement, let's revisit before launch after everything else is in place and we can make a better judgement.

Just one minor thing, I do not think, that having a gradient on the
backround image is a good idea at all. The remote skin looks completely weird
it has 3 different looking areas now.
A more uniform image would be better.

A more uniformly colored background would be a big improvement.
Comment 6 Andy Grundman 2009-08-12 09:25:14 UTC
What can we do about this?
Comment 7 ndijulio 2009-08-12 09:33:16 UTC
We are working on darkening the top of the default "Encore" background so that it will appear more "uniform." The artwork will be revised and submitted end of week.
Comment 8 Pat Ransil 2009-09-01 07:39:41 UTC
We tried darkening the Encore (teal) wallpaper, however, this increased the legibility only marginally. What it did do is muddy or "dirty" the teal towards the top. We believe the readability is good as is and we offer different backgrounds (including black) that the user can chose if the contrast is not sufficient.
Comment 9 Andy Grundman 2009-09-01 07:47:31 UTC
Then we should change the default wallpaper... bah.
Comment 10 Jim McAtee 2009-09-01 08:25:22 UTC
And it's fugly.
Comment 11 ndijulio 2009-09-01 09:43:31 UTC
I understand that wallpapers are going to be polarizing. Personally, the first thing I do when I buy a CE product is look what other wallpapers they have.

Are you suggestions of the 10 different wallpapers we support on device that NONE of these are appealing to you? If you have suggestions for improvements please feel free to open a bug under enhancements to document your ideas.
Comment 12 Andy Grundman 2009-09-01 09:45:26 UTC
My original suggestion was that Sonata should be the default.
Comment 13 Jim McAtee 2009-09-01 09:50:15 UTC
The default wallpaper should _not_ be polarizing. It should be relatively neutral, like Sonata.
Comment 14 ndijulio 2009-09-01 10:01:09 UTC
I understand, however, that shipped has sailed many times over. Marketing,
packaging, websites, demos, etc. all use Encore with little mention of the
other wallpapers. From a consistency point of view this is a WON'T FIX. If
Sonata work's better for your tastes and environment than please feel free to
edit your personal device.

Gentlemen please understand that a design process has already occurred and the defaults were selected internally by Logitech. This is not "one man's" opinion.

Seth- If you have anything to add please comment...

Usability has to trump all other considerations. Who cares if the box shows some other wallpaper on the display?
Comment 16 Seth Schulte 2009-09-01 11:31:03 UTC
I don't have an issue with Encore. I also don't have an issue with Sonata. There are some pros and cons to each but I think they both generally work fine.

Given that, I would just leave the default as it is (i.e., Encore).
