There should be some explanation at the top of the on-device App Gallery screen that tells you what checking off the items actually does.  Just a few words like:

Choose apps below to add them to your home menu and use them.

Or something...

Will factor this into  the design and implementation (a lot more work still needs to be done here, it's gonna be more than a list with checkboxes)
